Noise from around timing cover

Featured Replies

Hi there

My car is a Octavia 2.0 TDI vRS 2016

I have a scraping noise coming from under or around my timing cover. It can be heard best when cold and almost becomes inaudible when the engine reaches operating temperature. You can listen here

I took to it to the local garage in Bellshill, outside Glasgow as I didn't want to drive too far. They diagnosed timing belt as the car had reached the 5 year mark, although it's only done 48,000 miles. They changed the belt with full kit (although I'm not sure if that includes tensioner) and when I got it back and started it after the engine had gone cold the noise returned. Any idea what it might be? I'm fairly sure the noise is from under the timing cover but not 100% certain.

Any thoughts appreciated

Another TDI driver reported this recently. First thoughts are the cam belt  cover just touching. If you had it replaced, I am amazed that the garage didn't cure it, I presumed they explained the ource of the noise. Merely replacing the timing belt wouldn't change much as the old one would have been taut. Take it back to the garage and have them explain.

Normal sound for those TDI engines- from oil/vacuum pump. VAG call this "cosmetic audio defect". My '2016 car do this since new and our company new VW Crafters (all) sounds same. Sound is from right front wheel side, louder when cold, more silent when warm. +Already discussed in Briskoda ;-)

Yeah mine makes this noise and it's completely normal unfortunately. I've heard other Octavias making the same noise when I'm in the supermarket carpark or just generally out and about, which was quite reassuring back when I was first told it was normal and they all did it. Annoying, but at least it's nothing to worry about :)

Agree with above. Mine (2.0tdi 2016 non vrs) does that from cold and then it lessens once warmed up. It's well documented as the vacuum oil pump. Nothing to be worried about.
