Wheel question

Featured Replies

Hi all, my 21 1.5 dsg is fitted with crater 8J 225/40/19 wheels, with offset ET45. For me the worst thing about the car 😡. I have been offered some from a superb 6.5J 215/55/17 with offset ET41. Rolling circumference is ok (virtually identical) so I’m only concerned about the ET (unless someone has other concerns), yes I know I can buy Karoq 17” but I’m being offered ones that are mint and a great price.

Well, I don't think a 4mm change in offset will matter much if at all. But will the 17"s fit over your brakes?

Thanks for replies, 17” should, I have the style model but the ambition comes with the 17” Ratikon wheels as standard. I’ve tried ‘will they fit’ and it offers me several 17” options so I’m assuming they would be ok.

My 16” winter wheels fit fine, but offset has to be correct to clear brakes.

Skoda doesn't list any 6.5J rims, but the approved 6J rims are ET43 and 7J are ET45. Hence, 6.5J ET41 seem a bit off.

6J x 16" ET43 are factory approved rims and of course they do clear the brakes (I use them with winter tyres), but the calibration weights used must be low-profile.

They are 7j width so a bit wider, however ISTR someone on here has 6.5j 17” Q3 alloys for his winter set without any problems.  However don’t rely on my vague memories, esp after a few glasses of rather nice Aussie red.

PS This type.  Again from memory and I could be wrong, that has been known.  It was a Tuesday and raining.

The 6.5J 17” are from a 2018 superb and not the Karoq which are ET41. 17” listed for Karoq are as you say 7J. I think lots of people run VAG group wheels I just not sure if a 4mm offset will cause me any issues

Aye, weel remembered, Sir....   My wife's 2019, SE L 190 TDI on its 6.5 J x17" Audi Q3 alloys with 215/60 x 17 Dunlop D5 Winter Sport.  ET on these wheels is 33mm and the car drives very well on them.

6.5Jx17 ET41 isn't going to be a problem.

Even 6.5Jx16 ET33 with 215/60R16 or 215/65R16 is unlikely to cause a problem. 215/65R16 is a much cheaper tyre size than 215/55R17.

Using ET33 is the same as using ET45 and 12mm wheel spacers.

Many thanks folks, just a general question, at what point would you need to use spacers? 6mm? 8mm?

Have I got this ET/offset malarkie correct in my mind?  A lower ET means the wheel sits further out and higher further in?  So ET33 would sit 12mm further out than the ET45 on Ratikons, and ET51 (if there was such a thing) would be 6mm further in?  Amazing what puzzles me this merry morning! :D

Yes smaller ET wheel sticks out more

Just when I thought I had it straight in my mind!  Reminds me of maths at school, many, many, many, years ago and square root of negative 1.  No wonder I abandoned maths and embraced geology!  :D

The way I remember it is that a smaller offset brings the tyre further away from the suspension strut.
