70mm deep speakers into Fabia front doors. CUT!

Featured Replies

Just in case anyone wants to fit 70mm deep speakers into front doors I thought I would post some finished pics so you know what to expect. I didn't really want to cut up my door cards but after a lot of thought I took the plunge. After all the car is 5 years old with high miles and I intend to keep it for some years until it falls apart. Also this was the only way to get my 70mm deep pioneers or any other deep speakers into the front without the back of the door card pushing in on the rubber speaker surround.

I was too busy effing and jeffin during the install to take pictures but this is a short version of what I did.

I removed door card

Turned the card over and laid it on the floor (cloth side down)

Put a blob of blu tac into the centre of the original speaker grill section

I took a compass (loaded with a pencil) and got the point dead centre of the round grill section

I then ran the compass round making a number of reference rings, the largest ring being the one for the spacer to pop through.

Then out came the jigsaw with a coarse blade to make the first cut

I would say be a bit careful at this point because you don

Why didnt you just run the wire properly through the rubber boot?

Still novel approach to the speaker depth issue.

I couldnt figure it out. Looked like the plastic connector plug would not have enough space to get this heavy speaker wire through so I gave up on it.

I posted up how to do it somewhere around here, its really simple. Just disconnect the plug and pull the other side through and reconnect so its out of the holder leaving a big gap to get the cable though.

There is actually more than one plug. Its quite simple to pop a connector out of the block and leave it out to allow speaker cable in :)

As for 70mm deep speakers... I have 67mm deep in my doors with no problems. The door card needs persuasion to get it back on, but it is definitely possible to get speakers under the door cards.

Damn! ah well whats done is done. I cant face any more messing around with it. I will make a note for next time if I ever get a vrs :-)

Lol, don't worry about it fella. They dont look too bad anyway.

After speaking to a Fabia owner at a car show recently, I'm thinking about splitting the plastic bit off the door card and having a trimmed pod. Wish me luck.

yeah go for it...dont forget to post the pics if it all goes well :-) Gotta say that the Fabia front door instal is awkward because of the way the door card angles into the car as it nears the point where it meets the dash. As you can see in the pics the door card is level with the top of the spaker grill at the part where it meets the dash but is bellow the grill on the oposite side. I wonder if anyone has ever cut away the pocket and put 6 x 9 in there . The door and its fixings a well made and Im sure they would take it. I can crank up my fronts right up with absolutley no rattles so far.

6x9's do not go in front doors, dear God.

The only thing that makes things awkward is the way the window runner goes directly down the middle of the speaker aperture... otherwise the Fabia is a great car for installs!

Ah and oh dear. - Not with your install, it's just I was hoping to keep mine more standard for a while... Maybe not now.

I don't particularly want my speakers on show, so my idea is to build out the grille bit flush with the main door panel, add a spacer to blend it down into the door pocket area. Can either use speaker mesh or use an acoustic cloth to trim it up.
