iV set charge limit possible?

Featured Replies

New Octavia PHEV arrived today, plugged it in my garage and left it charging.

I want to stop charging after 80% for example, because I don't need all the range on my daily drives.

But I could not find a setting to set a maximum charge limit!

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this?

I'm looking at the Skoda Connect app and I can manually stop the charge, but that's not ideal..

Someone will know,

but why not just leave charging to 100% having maybe plugged in with the 20 or 50% charge as the starting point when you get back to the charger?

Electricity does not weigh anything like driving about with a full tank of fuel does if you really only need 20 litres for your journey.

Well, I'm not sure if it helps long term or not, but I want to take care of the batteries as much as possible. I plan to keep it for a long term.

Usually the recommendations that I've read say to not leave is discharged (to 0% or near 0%) and to not constantly charge to 100%.

That's my concern, and I assume it is also applicable to smaller batteries from hybrid cars..

I hear and read all sorts of stuff about batteries.

With such a small range on Electric i imagine many will be charging to 100%.

The system installed by the manufacturers should protect battery life.  That is letting you think you are using 100% when really you are just using 98% say, so later when the battery condition decreases it can take the full charge.

I talked with Skoda about it. They told me not to be afraid of the 100%. In fact the car changes the pace of the charging when it reaches 80% to protect the battery. Furthermore we have the 8 years battery warranty at 80% capacity so I won't bother so much.

Related to set up a maximum I don't think it's possible, what I do know is that you can set a minimum. See the attached image or look in the manual for the e manager.

Do you mind answering a question? While you are charging it do you have any icons displayed on the virtual cockpit? I'm getting a yellow warning apart from the green plug. Just wondering if this is happening to other people.

Cheers

I'm always on the cautious side on these things...

Shame there's no upper limit then! Oh well... I will have to manage manually when I can and try not to worry much when I leave it alone...

About the warning light, yes, I did saw it on when I plugged in, and remembered your topic actually! But I want to test again, because I was with the door and windows opened, key inside, etc. Will try again in a controlled scenario and report back!

Is it, Car not Mobile. Can not be move?

Is this not a similar warning to that with EV's,   'You are plugged in',

as in do not attempt to start the motor while plugged in, or more importantly do not start and drive off?

?

Or is there another warning about that.

In my case if you try to look at the warning it stays weird things. Once it was that I had the trunk or the engine compartment open (both of them closed) but yes I assume is a warning they don't have linked correctly to the infotainment like hey remember you're plugged in. The weird thing is that you have as well the green plug... Perhaps green plug is charging and yellow sign is you're plugged... The dealer told me to forget about it with the basic explanation that perhaps while charging some systems are off and that's the yellow warning about :D

Just registered an account since I actually might be able to help you out here.

You can put a limit on the charging level through the skoda connect app in the charging scheduler (not sure of the correct English name as mine is in Danish).

I found it possible to limit the charge if a schedule is present (and limited), however it does not work if you have more than one schedule for some obscure reason.

Interestingly enough the same option is not present in the scheduler directly in the car.

Hope it helps

Yes it sure helps! Just configured the scheduling on the app, and looks exactly what I need.

Indeed it would be better to have the option on the car, since clearly it is capable of it…

Many thanks :)

The vehicle has to display a warning ⚠️  sign while charging to attempt to stop you driving away with the locked in cable which would cause a lot of damage so its just logical that whilst charging there will be a warning sign on the display.

I have a great deal of experience with lithium ion batteries as well as all lithium batteries and not just in a hobbyist way.

Each vehicle will have a battery management system much the same as in anything that utilises lithium type batteries placed their to prevent overcharging as well as an extremely low discharged state.

Both of these are not good for these batteries so when you get into your vehicle and it shows 100% or 0% there will be a healthy margin of error built in so your battery pack could charge safety up to say 105% or down to -5%.

This is extremely simplified however be assured that a great deal of testing as well as safety margins of error are involved with your cars batteries.

Hope this information helps.

Just because the vehicle advises you that you have 100% charge doesn't necessarily mean that's the true figure.

Just keep that in mind, a better metric to display would be the option to see the actual voltages of each battery pack which makes up what I believe is the 13 Kwh unit.

To someone like myself I would much rather see voltages than a % of charge as this would provide me with a great deal more information than a simple % however I understand that these manufacturers need to make things as easy for the 99% to understand.
