Yeti 1.6TDI aftermarket shock absorbers

Featured Replies

Good evening! I own a 2014 1.6 TDI Yeti. I had all original shock absorbers replaced at 121000 km (current odometer reading 122500 km) with KYB Excel G's. Although the ride was improved, I find them not as stiff as the original ones, resulting in more leaning while turning and I don't get enough information from the road. In other words I think they're too soft for this car. I could go for the original ones but they cost more than Billstein's B6! Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket shocks for this car? I like the ride to be firm with minimal leaning but not in the sport region.

Thank you in advance for any help!

I think comfort and handling are mutually exclusive, I have a Greenline 2 1.6tdi and will be softening the rear springs and swapping to 215/60/16 tyres.

I would not have thought the shocks would affect lean in corners much.

Me too... Maybe I have to check the springs. They've done several km's with the bad shocks.

Springs and/or (anti)roll bars to make a car stiffer in roll. The dampers will only affect the transient roll rate, not the roll angle.

What tyre size are you using?

Try fitting narrower tyres. This will force you to go round corners slower, resulting in less body roll.

You might even have 280mm/288mm diameter front brake discs, in which case 205/70R15 could be used instead of 215/60R16. 15" wheels have never been fitted as standard to the Yeti, but many owners fit non-standard tyres/wheels to their cars.

Vredestein Quatrac 5 205/70R15 96T (currently listed for £58.65 on camskill...so much cheaper than many of the other Yeti tyre sizes)

Thank you all for your answers.

I had the chance to drive a friend's similar Yeti (same model and same 205/55/16 Continental Premium Contact 6 tires) who had recently replaced his shocks with new, original ones. His car was stiffer in turns and felt more controllable on bumps. I visited an authorized Skoda service where they told me that these KYB's are not suitable for this car due to it's weight. It's either the original ones (monotubes) or Sachs (twin tubes) for this car. Has anyone had similar experience, I mean has anyone changed the stock ones for aftermarket? If yes, was the experience better or worse?
