Fabia MK1 MOT Advisory - Exhaust Minor Leak

Featured Replies

Hello,

My 2006 Fabia just passed it's MOT with only two advisories, rear spring coil and exhaust pipe leak. The rear spring coil looks like an easy fix but I am not sure about the exhaust, the mechanic sent me the below video and this is the description from the MOT certificate:

"Front lower exhaust pipe has a minor leak"

When he dropped the car off he briefly mentioned something about the wire thing he points at and something about a clamp but I'm lost.

Any help on what I need to do would be much appreciated.

Ignore it until/unless the leak gets louder and/or you start getting exhaust gases in the cabin.

Hi Tui, welcome to the forum. That looks like a flexible coupling failing - personally I'd give that a closer look as carbon monoxide is very toxic but odorless, although you can often smell other combustion-products if exhaust gasses are leaking into the cabin.

The wire mesh once covered the whole corrugated (flexi) section, to keep little stones from getting trapped between the convolutions which might then puncture it, non-essential.

The leak is probably at the dual sleeve clamp he points at at the end of the video, but may also be at the flexi. You'll have to ask.

Relatively cheap to replace the front as there isn't a catalytic converter in that front section on the 1.2 engines, but there is a lambda sensor at the front end, so be careful with that if DIY'ing.

There's a possibility that the leak has come about due to excessive engine movement fore-and-aft, this might result from a rear engine mount ("dogbone mount") that is allowing too much motion due to age/wear.

The flexi to solid pipe joint looks to be broke as the end of the flexi pipe is not sat square to the rigid pipe as it would be when welded.

Yeah, good shout Keith. In fact the noise gets quieter when he goes to the dual clamp area, not louder.

Hello,

Thanks all for the responses, the mechanic did mention something about the lambda probe when he was explaining how to fix it to me. I think I will leave this one to the professionals given all your responses but I will source the parts myself thanks to all your help.

Thanks!

Tui

This is sort of what the wire mesh stuff would have looked like before it disintegrated.....
