Tdi 150cv 4x2 is faster than a 190cv 4x4

Featured Replies

Yesterday I met a friend and I went out before him, I could not detach myself from him ... both in D mode without "kick down".

I am confused, is it normal ??

Both mk3, one with 17" and me with 18" wheels.

He's got more torque, less drivetrain drag, and a lighter vehicle (in particular a lower reciprocating mass).

A lower reciprocating mass?

Are the pistons & con rods that different?

Wouldn't they only affect the engines ability to pick up revs in neutral and not the power developed?

Different road wheels, and transmissions.

They are not reciprocating masses.

According to publications the weight difference is about 150 kilos.

On paper 190 4x4 is much faster than 150 4x2 (0-60mph 7.7s vs. 8.8s), 190 4x2 is slower than 190 4x4 (8.0s vs 7.7s)

Are both cars 6-speed DSG? Has your friend's been remapped?

Try it without the towrope!

!!? Since when do road wheels not go round when a vehicle is in motion?

Rotating isn't reciprocating. :)

You mean that you were side by side, both at the same speed, same gear, and floored it at the same time and you could not lose him??  Because anything different than what I described is an invalid comparison of no use...

I bet if you repeat it as I describe you will see yourself "detaching" slowly but steadily.

40bhp and around as much more torque or thereabouts is not enough to offset the advantage of starting earlier or having more favorable conditions at these levels as some people might think.

I have seen 380bhp cars not able to catch up with 310bhp ones when the latter ones started earlier or were already making a higher speed, at least not before reaching 180+ km/h, it's not that easy. Even less so at the sub 200 bhp levels you describe.

My mention of pistons & con rods should have given the clue.

I can't work out what sort of race this was that didn't involve kickdown - did it start with both of you at maximum revs in top gear?

it was joining us to a highway, I was in front and behind.  In principle the two in D, I could not detach myself from him.

The vehicle behind was drafting the long roof estate car in front, just like in BTCC with the Volvos.

If they had pulled out to pass then we would know if they had more power!
