Satnav fail after map upgrade

Recommended Posts

2016 Octavia Mk3 Estate SE L

Sad news.  I tried to upgrade my maps to the latest version, something I've done a few times before.

It seemed to work.  Started navigating a trip yesterday morning.  After a stop start, there is no longer any access to the Satnav or Traffic menus.

When I press the nav button, I get a popup: "Navigation: Function not supported.".  When I press the button for Traffic, nothing happends.

Also, no compass on the driver display.

Same symptoms when I reverted to a backup of the map data.

This happens even when I don't have the map SD card inserted.

I have to admit that I was poking around with Car Scanner Pro but only adding in things like wiper blade park etc.

Help needed!

Arh - difficult one this.  Your "Car Scanner Pro" has obviously upset something in the coding of the MIB system.  I am assuming that this is the product:

https://www.carscanner.info/coding-mqb/

This is one of the lesser known products I've heard of & I've seen/heard other similar products have similar results (ie they mess up the coding).  This is why it is generally recommended that you stick with either ODBEleven (Pro) or get a genuine copy of VCDS.

If you can remember what coding you did (if it was in an App Form), then try and de-select the options you chose.  Failing that, you are into a world of trying to find a similar car (spec wise) to yours.  Other than that....I would budget about 2hrs with either a VW Specialist or your local Skoda Garage and try and get them to redo the settings via ODIS.  Copying in @langers2k to see if he can assist (as he is the keeper of car configs).

I'd agree with that, it's likely Car Scanner Pro has done something weird.

Might be worth contacting their support team and seeing if there is a backup or log of the coding changes etc?

If not, I'd try and find a local member with VCDS to do an autoscan and adpmaps for you. That should give enough information as a starting point :)

Thanks very much for the replies.  Sounds like I should not have been mucking about with that tool.

I suppose I should say what happened.  I decide it was time for me to get more self sufficient.  I did my first oil + oil filter change.  That seemed like a success.  Now I'm thinking I ought to add changing the fuel filter to my new skills.  So to do the fuel filter the pukka way, it seems you want to run the pump after changing it to prime it before starting the engine.  That's when I got access to the Car Scanner Pro - cheapest way to get access to my car's software.  Then I noticed I could use the same software to set features like the thing that always bugged me about the car, the wipers sticking half way across the screen if I was turned the engine off mid wipe.  So I started fiddling.  Then I upgraded the map and after that... no navigation.

So, thanks for the advice,  I will do a deep dive into the Car Scanner Pro software.  It looks like it stores the pre change codes.  Where is a good (and safe) place to learn how coding works?

As an aside btw, I met up with some friends this weekend on a campsite in Cornwall.  2 Mk2 Octavias, 2 Mk3 Octavias, 2 Superbes and one honorary Golf!  Popular cars with my friends these!

Thanks again.  I'll report back.

You could do worse by starting to have a look here: pinned to the top of the MK3 Octy forum:

At least you can get your head around what the process is on known mods - a smattering of German helps (as the coding is partly in English and partly in German)

Thanks very much for the tips.  Thankfully I have managed to recover the situation.  Not sure if that's a good lesson or a bad lesson about fiddling with coding.  Losing navigation was never going to be the end of the world as we know it.

For anyone else that stops by, the problem was with the "Show offroad screen" app in the Car Scanner Pro app.  I had enabled it.  It seemed to work apart from having the tilt always zero (I assume due to not having the sensor.  The navigation was also functional at this point.  I then reverted it by setting it to disabled.  That seems to be when the navigation failed.  In trying to unpick things, I went back to the original time when I set it in the coding history (shown in the attachment), selected the 3 items and restored to the original state.  The navigation and traffic features were immediately cured.  I'm hoping that it stays that way as curiously, the failure before happened mid drive.

As the fine folks who replied implied, it was nothing to do with the update to the map data.

Phew!

You could try and upgrade your MIB2 system to version 0363 (SOP3.x) - which might fix that niggle for you.  Earlier version had bugs in the firmware that will cause odderties.

Thanks.  How would I get hold of that update?
