Are used prices really THAT strong?

Featured Replies

As per the title really. I've been seeing for sale ads on various groups on Facebook and the prices people are asking for MK3 VRS models seem a bit crazy. Lots of comments about supply and strong prices. I've seen 230's up for private sale with an 18k asking price for example. I know asking and getting are two different things but does anyone know if these are actually selling anywhere near that?

The reason I ask, I have around 12 months left on my PCP and I'm wanting to jump out fairly soon and I'm trying to gauge the market. I have a 68 plate VRS (petrol 245) with DSG and only 11,500 miles and the arnold Clark finger in the air is 18k with an extra £500 on offer. The car is mint and although they won't be included in any valuation it has the virtual cockpit, DCC, reverse camera, heated seats and VRS paint which would make it more appealing to a buyer.

The valuation online has jumped up quite a lot recently it seems.

Anyone got any experience? I'm actually thinking of contacting the nearest dealer and asking if they want it :D

It's happening all over, especially in the sports car market. There are huge supply issues on new cars and this has caused the used market to surge.

It won't last forever but things aren't going to get back to normal this year

If those with high 'Asking Prices' are getting them sold for what they are asking then the 'prices will really be strong'.  It is all about the 'If'.

The last of the non-opf petrol cars are fetching a bit of a premium at the moment, especially the ones that are likely to receive a tuning.

I have seen it on Audi, VW, BMW and Merc and I have no doubt Skoda models will see the same thing.

Lots of people have lost lives and livelihoods with this pandemic but conversely there are lots with unspent cash in their pocket and time on their hands to think and search for last of the best cars.

@e-Roottoot hence the question, has anyone seen it happen in real life :D

@flybynite mines got the GPF but the whimsical online valuations have went up by 2.5k over the last few months. I totally resonate with what you say, I've been very lucky to have been in work the whole time and have managed to come out of things in a good financial position. I'm thinking more and more about having an expensive ornament outside that I do less than 5k a year in and putting that money somewhere else. On the other hand if the valuation is anywhere near I could lease an Xdrive M135i for the same I'm paying for the VRS and have around 3.5k left over after the deposit. One thing the changes the last 18 months haven't helped is my art of over thinking things

The figure I had gotten from the Arnold Clark online value my car, was exactly what my local dealer offered last week for my Kodiaq against a new Kodiaq.

Its also easy to get a settlement figure for your PCP from Skoda/ VW finance

Personally I think it’s only the dealers who are winning. Used car prices are only strong if you can offer the finance and a warranty to get as close to that new car experience as you can. If you own a nearly new car you are in a strong position to change it early and get a deal on a new car but if you are thinking of a private sale I would suggest the market is too small to be worth the time it would take to find one of the very few buyers with £18-20k to spend on a ‘normal’ car in either cash or an unsecured loan and are willing to buy privately with the lower amount of protection that comes with.

@Kenny R that's quite promising! It leads me into my answer to @SashaGrace response...

I'd not even consider putting it up for private sale to be honest. Partly for the reasons you outline but mainly because I can't stand the kind of people you have to deal with. I've been buying and selling cars and motorbikes of my own for over 20 years now and the hassle and bother I've had over £100 let alone £18k is unbearable. There are some good people out there but its a pit of idiocy and scum.

I remember I was selling my hayabusa, I was in the pub watching the football and some geordie bloke rang me up telling me he could get them 'much cheaper' where he was and he could only give me 2.5k for it, he would come get it that day, when I declined he gave me all sorts of abuse. I sold it on ebay for 5k but these people exist. I'm sat with 2 guitar amps I'm selling and I'd rather take the loss than put them on ebay lol

I would look to shift it onto WBAC or Arnold Clark or similar. It has got another 6 months on the warranty and it's mint but I don't want the bother you get waiting for that right person to come along.

I think part of the reason is also the well publicised ongoing issues with the Mk IV, People would rather buy a good condition Mk III.

Mine has gone up £1000 in value since I first checked. Though I won't sell it just yet as I have haggled with my finance provider and now only pay £160 a month for it. £185 if you include tax and insurance, so I would be daft to get rid when I still enjoy the car.

WBAC first offered me about £6500 for my 1.6 TDi SE at around 44k at beginning of year, peaking in late May at £7100 (!) at about 48k and now down to £6800 in late June at 50k.

There are one or two bargains out there if you look hard enough. Just bought my wife a 2014 Skoda Fabia estate 1.2tsi 105bhp with full service history, 51k miles all matching Hankook tyres with loads of tread left £3.5k from a private seller- rear bumper has scratches and one of the alloys is scruffy- got a replacement in mint condition for £40 and just getting quote for scratches- should be around £150 - looking around at dealer prices same car is £5200 plus and i doubt they'd be as nice as this one- even mot history is very good.

I was offered by WBAC back in December 2020- £9850 for a car. Every month I kept sticking it in WBAC until eventually they offered in May this year £11,350, same vehicle with increased mileage etc.

Actually traded it on paper for £12,500 to a BMW main dealer on a px for something else.

So yes second hand due to lack of new is going through the roof, same on commercial small vans, struggling to get anything new from stock, most now are build to order with 16 week lead times on new - second hand vans now fetching silly prices 😩

I am in the market for a nice MK3 VRS 2013-2016 and I agree that some prices are a bit optimistic….

Theres a Meteor Grey, 2016 VRS Estate, 220BHP TSI at Hendy Skoda Salisbury up at a whopping £18990.

My local garage put me onto WBAC purchase price as a good guide to the actual value of a car.

When I was shopping around in 2020, I found cars up to about 3 years old seemed pretty good value, with cars 5-8 years old seeming relatively expensive by comparison. Turns out I know next to nowt about assessing the value of used cars.

I've found the best thing to get a feel for used prices is to compare prices from around the country for the same age/type of car. Some areas suffering price slumps, while others surge at the same time.

I was happy with the price I agreed for a 2019 SE Technology with under 13000 miles . The car is like new for a good price - though even after I played hard ball, the dealer would only drop a few hundred below sticker price

But I have seen other garages list 2015 octavias with 50k miles and a lower spec for not much less than I am paying for mine

I think you got a really good deal on your SE Tech, tiber.

Thought I'd dig this up!

I finally got round to taking my car to arnold clark for an appraisal on Friday. The online offer was £23,239 and after looking at it for 10 minutes they offered me the full valuation plus an extra £9 because I over estimated the mileage.

Quote from the manager of the dealership 'we will be here all night looking for something wrong with this, it's an absolute credit to you'.

So to answer my own question from the start of this thread... yes, yes they are that strong!!  Car will be going this week and I'm retreating to the land of 10 year old diesels that can be parked anywhere and carry lumber inside and outside!

Crazy isn't it. WBAC offered more for mine than I paid over 18 months ago when I requested a quote 2 weeks ago.

Good result for you 👍 (apart from having to part with the 245)

Motorway have given me a price of up to £23.837 on my 2019 Scout with 30k on the clock!!!

Wow, I tried motorway on Friday and Saturday but I found the whole thing to be frustrating. After cleaning the car and taking 50 photos I found out you have to use their photo app and templates. Then I had to call them when I thought it was finished. After half an hour on hold I gave up. They called me Saturday morning and started asking me the same questions and I was starting to lose my patience a bit, so I asked how long the process would take and they said typically 10-14 days. I told the guy to forget about it and he waffled on for 15 minutes trying to get me to go ahead. Defo not in line with how that service is advertised.

I bought mine (2015 1.4TSI estate DSG) 3 years ago, having driven it for 3 yrs from new as a company car.

In August WBAC offered £8,870 (I just looked out of interest, not wanting to change).

Last week they offered £10,000 - a 12.7% increase in just under 2 months.

In terms of depreciation it's lost £1,350 over three years - £450 a year. Can't be bad...😁

Think I might keep it a while longer!

Its not the depreciation you should be looking at- its the highly inflated prices to change the car- you are no better off really at all.

@robs12 Don't get me wrong at all, I'm not punting it to AC because I don't like it! I like the car apart from its ridiculous road noise and the rattles it's starting to develop. I'm just going to break the circle I've been in for years of going from one PCP to and other PCP deal and having a car that I have to treat like a porcelain ornament because I'm scared of it getting damaged. The last 18 months has shown me what's important and having a £20k+ car sat outside doing 3000 miles a year just isn't a good use of resources anymore. So it's off to old semi-bangers for me and a car that I can park wherever I like without worrying, can carry timber about and drag through hedges out in the lakes. Something that works for me more than me working for it!

I've had 3 mk3 VRSesses and it's been a good time!

Not true in all circumstances. By the time I get paid out tomorrow my car will have cost me around £110 a month for 3 years. I will have £10k cash back, which I will then reinvest into a car that has gone up by around 600-1000 based on my observations. Add that to my reasons for changing - ongoing PCP, low mileage, damage by other idiots etc and the fact I can take it anywhere and carry anything without worry then I'd say yes I'm going to be better off than paying the monthly premium and then swapping it for another in 6 months.
