Traffic Jam Assist (Travel Assist)

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any experience of Traffic Jam Assist (part of the Travel Assist add-on) with a manual transmission? Skoda says that this feature is now available on manual transmission MKIV models but I’m interested to understand how it works to stop and start the car in traffic when there’s a manual clutch involved!?

It's on the Skoda web-site here: https://www.skoda-auto.com/world/octavia-videos - scroll down to "Traffic Jam Assist" and you'll see "The fourth-generation ŠKODA OCTAVIA offers the Traffic Jam Assist also for vehicles fitted with manual transmission." which seems pretty definitive, if rather difficult to believe - hence my question.

That quote doesn't say anything about bringing the vehicle to a halt; it only mentions pulling away, braking and turning - seems very misleading and confused to me...

I agree, but if you've ever used Traffic Jam Assist in an DSG model you'll know that the whole point of the system is really to relieve the driver from the constant brake-accelerate-brake cycle in stop-go traffic, so if TJA doesn't achieve this in a manual transmission, it can hardly be claimed to be TJA at all.

... and without having a clutch actuator (and probably a gear selector mechanism too as the car might have come to a halt in a high gear) there's no way it can achieve that.

I reckon, in theory, it can be done with a manual box. Yes, the driver has to change gear manually but that doesn’t deactivate ACC if its a quick enough change - so in theory it could bring the car to a halt. As to what benefit it provides I’m not sure - other than marketing hype.

Have I tried it? No.

Will I try it? No.
