Older 1.4/1/2 TSI high-ish mile Petrol examples? If they've survived this long.....

Featured Replies

.....are they likely to suffer the chain issues or are they just good examples worthy of a look?

Morning everyone!

I'm looking for a new (old) car and am going between lots of different models for various reasons.  I went to see a 2010 Yeti 1.2 with 91k miles on it yesterday and it drove great.  No audible rattle on start-up.  Bodywork unfortunately quite tired and beyond what I want to correct.

My question is as the title really - if they've got a good history with oil changes on the mark, are they worth a punt?  Are they survivors likely to give a good few years of service and if they were going to go wrong in terms of chain stretch etc, they would have by now?

Appreciate your thoughts!  :D

Best check the threads (many)  on early 1.2 TSI and the timing chain / tensioners and the upgraded ones late 2011/12 on.

If no record of the upgrade carried out then you might well need to be having that done.

Thanks for this info @e-Roottoot .  I've read through a lot of threads like this before having been on the fence about getting one a while back.  I guess my question is if they haven't suffered with the issues before now on an 2011 plate with 90k miles or higher for example - are they actually ever likely to?  Some of the issues I've read about were on vehicles with much lower mileage?

This can't affect every single engine out there with a pre-2012 1.2 or pre 2015 1.4 engine?

@RakerObviously it can not affect every vehicle.  But you want to find one that has had a 'fix / upgrade',  or be prepared to pay to have the upgrade done for peace of mind.

That means looking at invoices and maintenance record if there is one, or if you are looking at a noisy car then maybe expecting to have to have work carried out.
