Not so, LEDs have always been made from Gallium compounds not Germanium, the earliest LEDs were red and made from Gallium Phosphide but the later ones are more exotic Gallium compounds with different bandgaps to generate the different colours.

 

The first LEDs I used were from Plessey Semiconductors based near Plymouth, this was in 1976.
