What do 280/272 owners think of sport mode?

Featured Replies

I've had my 280 for about 7 months now. I can't help feeling that it needs a mode between Normal and Sport. On the BMWs you have Normal, Sport and Sport+ I believe.

Normal in the Superb just seems to change up way to soon and I cant see a huge difference between Eco and Normal much of the time other than the coasting mode.

Sport seems to be a full attack mode chasing the limiter which is a bit much when you have 300hp and you just want to drive a bit more briskly than normal. I will happily use the paddles if I want to chase the limiter.

Just seems like there is a mode missing compared to most modern autos. I'd almost be tempted to have sport mode dialled back with a DSG tune if I remapped it knowing if I'm really trying I'll be in manual anyways.

I've got a similar engine in another VAG car and was surprised to see an additional mode wasnt available to your car as there's 4 modes in mine! ECO, normal, sport and Cupra.

its not a new thing to the mk3 Superb.   its a DSG thing, be it the 6-speed or 7-speed wet clutch versions.  i don't know wat the 7-speed dry is like.

its the same with mk2 gen of Octavia, Superb etc etc as they too had the same 6-speed wet dsg (DQ250).

a DSG tune will fix that a lot and make Sport mode a lot more driveable.

I had DSG performance tune put in my previous 2011 mk2 Octavia RS 147TSi and it made Sports mode usable.

Horses for courses.  I feel the opposite and that it needs a Sport + mode. The sport mode on the 272 is adequate and doesn’t feel like absolutely ‘’full on’. To me the benefit of Sport mode is that it tightens up the suspension via DCC, so you can push on without as much body roll and DSG holds onto the gears longer, throttle response could be quicker. Even in sport mode, it’s not as as fun as my last mapped manual Octavia, which although only 20 Bhp more powerful, had 100nm extra torque.

I'm happy enough with Sport Mode use it if I'm kind of pressing on but feeling a bit lazy. If I'm properly pressing on i'm in manual on the paddle's anyway.

I mostly use sport mode when I am towing to get up to speed :-) I guess that makes me an old fart.

I usually put the car in Sport mode (steering, DCC etc), then immediately pull the DSG lever back to put the gearbox back in normal (drive). If I want manual control - just push the lever across and you can play with the gears manually - or use the paddles for short-term changes.

For my own use this works great - I have no desire to re-map the DSG - I'd rather have longevity!

I’d agree it could do with an additional mode as drive tends to change up far too early most of the time which is annoying when I’m leaving my village as there’s a hill that it always ends up in 4th immediately even though I’m only doing about 25mph then when I give it a little more just to get up to 30 it has to drop back to 3rd, with nearly 300bhp you’d think it could ride the torque enough to deal with a minor bill without having to drop down. As for sport mode I use it for fast pull away or some overtakes but even then it is never in the right gear for me, sits in a fairly high Rev range but still drops gears when I actually put my foot down to do the overtake so begs the question what’s the point?! I do use manual sometimes but suppose I’ve got lazy so don’t always have it in the right gear for an overtake that way…

Seems to be mixed feelings on this so always a good debate. Looking at the comments I wonder if the sports mode on the 7 speed 272 is better than that on the 6 speed 280. Its my 1st DSG car and prior to this I had only driven a Superb 190 DSG and a few 8 speed BMWs with the ZF box.

I certainly think it could do with an extra setting, especially with the flat torque curve of the 2.0 TSI meaning good progress can be made changing up right in between the typical shift points of Normal and Sport. My other car is an old 3.0 six pot bmw and that gives its best revving right out to the redline but I just don't feel the same way about the 2.0 TSI at the top end, it seems to happily give 85% without wringing its neck.

Like others mine spends a lot of time in individual...sports everything except the gearbox left in Normal which says a lot.

Maybe I'm just not ready to surrender control to the car.

+1, i too used to drive around with mine in Individual mode for years, mainly to firm up the DCC Suspension, but since i've done (recently) the DCC re-calibration, i'm in Normal mode almost all the time now.

my Individual mode settings....

Ooooh, what is this DCC recalibration you speak of? Your individual settings are exactly the same as mine.

u can read about it here.

with my car lowered 20mm on Eibach springs, doing the re-calibration changes/updates the DCC shock's compressed and uncompressed values.

its made a noticeable difference with my setup, one of the key ones, as described above - not having to put the suspension in "sport" setting anymore.

only time i put the suspension into sports mode is when i'm doing spirited runs up and down a windy mountain road.
