Air Con

Featured Replies

Hi, I have been trying to find a straight answer in regards to air con and econ. My car only has econ, no AC button so I’m assuming I don’t have air con? Some things I’ve read have said econ is air con but other stuff I’ve read contradicts it.
only hot air comes out of blowers at the moment so I’m assuming I don’t but wanted to check so I’m not suffering in this heat for no reason 🙄

That is a full Climatronic setup with integrated AC, pressing the ECON button stops the AC.

Nice one, I’ll take it In to the garage then and get it sorted

Try pressing the "Auto" button first. It may save you a trip, a bill, and a red face.

I’ve tried it, still just blowing warm air

if its still not working after a gas up( you can check if it has gas with vcds) might aswell replace the compressor and the condenser as theyre both weak links compressors on these cars are crap and wear out and the condensers leak

The compressors are not crap and any failure to pump is usually related to something external which would result in a compressor shut down code - pressure sensor etc, mechanical failure of the shear plate or drive hub, or the pressure modulating valve. OK the latter 2 could be described as a crap compressor but both are available as parts, can be replaced in situ and dont need the compressor replacing.

There is no point replacing a condensor if the system was correctly leak tested before gassing up.

the compressors solenoid is part of the compressor and is the most common point of failure = naff compressor and getting a matching one is usually in import from china or ebay job, and the condenser can hold a vacuum but have a slow leak out of the plastic cap on top of the desiccant tube , i have 4 mk5 platforms 2 golfs and 2 octavias and all have had one or all of the above symptoms and my last mk2 vrs also had a sticky solenoid .and if you google it almost no one with a golf or octavia will be on the original compressor, i would suggest that means theyre ****. the compressors metal piston might not break but if all the parts connecting to it to make it work are prone to failure its hardly a great design is it?

Our Octavia 4x4 that we've just traded in was a 2007 model with that climatronic system and it was still on its original compressor and working fine after a single top up a number of years ago.

I'd suggest the OP press the 'auto' button and actually set a low temperature to double check first as that picture is showing 'off at the moment...

'Econ' doesn't use the ac compressor to cool the air coming in...   It merely uses the outside air at whatever temperature to try and meet the internal target temperature.   If its hot outside you get hot air inside.

The other thing I'd try is resetting the control flaps...   So press and hold the econ button and then press the bottom left airflow direction button at the same time (or it might be the bottom right I can never remember).  The system will then reset all the flaps.

he should also get a vcds and check for a low refrigerant code if its not working before he does anything else

Still on about aircon. have now done 110400m and have never had service done as dealer said AC not needed at moment . Have now moved so have new Skoda dealer and they say its about time I had it done . But , it always works fine especially in this weather we have had. Any comments?.

if it gets ice cold and doesnt stink when its turned on id probably leave it alone

If it can make the car uncomfortably cold inside in this weather, that's as good as it gets. If it can't, look for automotive air conditioning in your phone book or yell.com; do not waste time and money taking the car to a main stealer.

Good point re the cap on the dessicator.

Its semantics as to whether a part of the compressor that can be replaced easily and cheaply on its own makes it a crap compressor or not, but it definitely does not mean that the compressor needs to be replaced which is what I took issue with.

99.99999999% of garages and 199% of main dealers will say compressor broken we need to fit a new one to fill our coffers, I reckon most golf & Octavias are actually on the original compressor but nobody is going to post that for google to record it, as most people use garages for repairs and swallow the lies that they are told I can absolutely believe that 99.99999% of people that had aircon problems ended up with a new compressor that they almost certainly did not need.

From the other side of the coin if I were repairing cars for a living again I would not ponce about changing the valves or the hubs/shear plates, the quality of what is sold is very variable and I have had several fail, no I would fit the best and most expensive compressor that I could, pocket the margin on the parts and not have any comeback.
