Leaky rear shock picked up on MOT

Featured Replies

Hi. Had an MOT done today on my 65 plate 190 TDI SEL Exec. Passed but tester pointed out a slightly ‘misting’ shocker on the rear.

I don’t think my car has adjustable suspension  (DCC) where the ride can be firmed up but I can choose ECO/normal/sport/individual driving modes. Does this sound correct or is the presence of these modes indicative of DCC? There is no comfort mode listed.

The garage are unsure whether the required shocker has a ‘switch and wire on the top’. Does this make sense to anyone? Am I looking at a £90 or £400+ for a new shocker plus fitting/VAT?

Either way, you should be replacing both dampers as a pair, oh and going somewhere actually competent to work on your car.

Pretty sure the cable is near the bottom of the shock. Should be easy to spot if it's DCC or not.

Slight misting is not a problem at all. Hence no test failure.

Clean up and monitor over the coming months/year.

Misting is caused by a bit of overpressure in the shocker blowing off by the shaft seal, recent hot weather combined with some hard work can bring this about.  Its relatively common. As suggested, wipe it down and monitor. Often its a one off or rare event.
