Camshaft removal

Featured Replies

It's really only hard the first few times. What tools do you have? You'll need a puller as has been mentioned a torque wrench that's accurate and assembly grease. Clean containers for stuff and all the torque settings. A phone with a camera would be useful and the Haynes book would give you a good idea but don't take it as gospel!

I understand and I'm sorry you're having a tough time, I wasn't trying to be rough but replacing the cam is a big job and you'll need some special tools to lock it all up.

You also need to worry about why the cam needs replacing, it's usually down to the wrong oil used in an oil change, first thing you need to do is see how much metal glitter there is in the sump, if a lot comes out with the oil then you might be better off just swapping out the whole engine.

Thankyou for your advise matey it means alot seriously.. I'm just trying to learn and save money as I've lost my job.  I now realise that its a bigger job than I thought.. that's why I asked for advise, I felt really bad that I offended you, or other people on this site..   I hate upsetting people..   Especially when I'm asking for their advise..     I'm not gonna give up tho..

As its got 170,000 miles on the clock I'm hoping it's just wear and tear...

I'll keep you all informed how it goes, fingers crossed lol...

I need to replace the valve lifters, the workshop probably have no new screws, is it mandatory to put the new screws of the camshaft?

They are stretch bolts so you cannot re-torque them correctly.

If the lifters are worn then so is the cam, they wear together.

Has the wrong oil been used?

No, the mechanic did start the engine without the pulleys  cover and it catch some wires and the timing belt jumped several teeth and one or two lifters got damaged (is what says)

I am having nightmares with this mechanic
