Error P242a , 1.6 TDI CAYC

Featured Replies

I have recently taken to the local garage to change two tires. I usually take it here for MOT & Small jobs (Irrelevant depending on where sensor 3 is 😁).

On the way back I noticed the dreaded flashing glow plug light. Engine management light came on not long after.

Plugged it in, Scanned it & found P242a Bank 1 Sensor 3 error.

I have had trouble locating it. I’ve got some pictures along with the OBD2 reading.

Is the sensor the brown socket?

Monitor temperatures displayed in measuring blocks while disconnecting sensors one by one. When the reading for sensor 3 changes, you've found the correct one?

Hi Lads.

Think I found the culprit. Sat below the turbo (Very awkward to get the hands!) I did notice half the thread showing. not sure if it’s normal or it’s been replaced before, and done a half ass job in fastening it.

The DPF inlet temperature was 999 celsius. So now i’m expecting a large amount of soot buildup. 🙄

The black shade of the thread was showing , so now i’m wondering to save some £ or some elbow grease, would it not being screwed in fully have caused the error?

It's just a thermocouple, they generally work or they don't, 999 degrees suggests it's broken.

So the original culprit to which I thought it was turned out to be correct.

So awkward.

I’ve bit the bullet and bought one from eBay – OEM. Taken from a VW Caddy 2010. Which hopefully will do the job 😁
