Repairing worn out steering wheel (Octavia mk3 2016)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My steering wheel is quite worn out and I'm a bit unsure about the materials! Is it all leather and therefore, can I use a leather repair and coloring kit?

I'll attach some pictures so that you can see what I mean! :)

Thank you

I recommend you go and visit a seat upholstery place. Ideally the steering wheel has to come off, then it is new perforated leather to be out on the wheel.

Alternatively, a new steering wheel can be purchased from your Skoda dealer (and coded in for the buttons).

In the mean time, try some saddle soap and then leather food (Neat's-foot oil) to clean it up, then a sparing amount of black boot polish to bring up the colour. (Making sure to brush off and buff up with a cloth, you don't want dirty hands).

I have done this before on worn steering wheels, it will never make it 'like new' but it will dramatically improve the look and feel of the steering wheel.

I'd be tempted to try and obtain another old, heavily worn steering wheel (assuming you can get one for peanuts), and try out some rejuvenating techniques on that, before trying out anything drastic on the one in your car.

Thank you for the replies, I found a leather professional website and they recommended me to use this kit (swedish website sorry): https://www.laderspecialisten.se/produkt/laderfarg-litet-kit-for-infargning-av-bilinredning-5-x-50-ml/

Also they provided a guide (with pictures) here (swedish website sorry): https://www.laderspecialisten.se/guide-for-att-farga-om-en-ratt/

They said that it would be accomplished using the sponge in the kit and without the airbrush as well, but I'm not sure that the material in the steering wheel is all leather... Is it?

I like the results from that kit but me personally I'd hope a professional could do it for me. Painting is an art and the steering wheel is something that's always in your line of sight when driving.
