Superb 4x4 diff leak

Featured Replies

Hi, I had my Superb serviced a few days ago, they said the rear diff looked like it's leaking. He said he thought it was from where a wire comes out, or similar. It's not dripping, just a bit damp.

Any ideas, is this urgent? Cheers

I don't think it's urgent; clean it up and look again next month.

That looks like the haldex pump or filter cartridge area rather than the diff ?

When was your Haldex last serviced ?  Any garage should be replacing the O-rings etc when that is done, and the whole filter unit should be swapped out as part of the service.

Cheers

It was serviced by VW about 3 years ago. Might it be time for another one, get them to clean the guaze filter at the same time?

Yes, probably overdue based on time/mileage.

The correct service for gen 4 haldex would be to replace the removable cartridge filter, demount the pump and clean the stainer on the end of the pump, replace both filter and pump with new o-rings and then refill with new Haldex fluid.

There are also priming procedures required via VCDS to bleed air from the system before use.

If you use a Skoda / VW dealer the chances are they won't change the filter and will only change the fluid.  They probably won't also remove the pump and clean the strainer.  Find an independent who has knowledge of Haldex and tell them what you want done.

Cheers

Hi, hope everyone's doing well. I've just had the car MOT'd today and managed to get underneath and check the diff. It seems to be a bit worse, it was wiped down in September so is obviously leaking now.

Do these pictures give a good idea where from, it seems to be around the pump, is it just the gasket between the pump and the diff casing, the shaft seals seem dry?  Thanks!

looks like it might be coming from the filter or the pump
The filter is the black piece to the right of the pump

Get it in for a Haldex service asap and all should be good

Do you do repairs yourself?   as there was a really good guide on here how to do it

Thanks, that's very helpful. Doesn't it require pluging into VAG diagnostic equipment to bleed it afterwards though?

Yes you need to use vcds to bleed it

You can buy china copies for about £25

Not wanting to hijack the thread but what does skoda suggest about getting thr haldex serviced?
Ie is it mileage or time based?

Time based, every 2 calendar years IIRC.

Back when there were Mk2's it was 4 years / 40,000 miles VW /Skoda.

VW went 30,000 / 3 years and Skoda often had no idea.  Then it became 3 years / 30,000 miles and Skoda Main Dealers often having no idea about filters / screens.

Still they do not in lots of cases.

£85 spent at a Main Dealers can be just half a job done sadly.

An oil change is not enough.
