Difficulty removing dipstick

Featured Replies

My Octavia RS Wagon has around 1500kms now so it is time to test the oil level.

Unlike our 2015 Golf Wagon whose dipstick is easy to remove this one, although similar in appearance, seems to be stuck.

I cannot remove it.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I have tried rotating it before pulling but the clips seem to be intended to be aligned with the slightly squared-off sides of the tube.

I have tried pulling quite hard but I do not want to break anything and the tube itself seems fairly flimsy. Like many other things in the engine bay it seems to be made of plastic.

You just have to pull it harder, especially if you have not checked the oil for some time. Spray some lube around the clips first if you are too worried. I check my oil level frequently, even though my motor does not use any oil, so my dipstick comes out with only a gentle pull.

Such as WD40?

That will help yes. Then just give the dipstick a short sharp pull.

They do take a good grip sometimes. Checking the level frequently doesn't always help the stick come out any easier though.

@DaveFromSydney,you just need to keep trying, it will come out.

So I tried using all my strength and a "short sharp pull" and it worked.

The good news - the level is OK.

The bad news - see photo

Difficulty removing dipstick?

Be firm, just tell him to get out of his BMW!

Bit of a bump. I've got exactly the same problem, I thought there was some twist required. Sounds like I just need to tug on it extra hard. Anyone else had this happen to them?

The clips are just very stiff. It's a VW thing.
