Clutch Pedal not fully returning

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have been away from here for a few years i'm afraid but found this forum to be really helpful in the early days of my Octavia ownership.

As the tittle suggests the clutch pedal on my 2014 mk3 octavia vrs is not fully returning after depression.

I continued to drive the car for a couple of months (only a couple of short journeys per week) as this didn't happen all of the time but started to occur more often. So I left it with a trusted garage for a week for them to drive so that the could assess what remedial work was required, unfortunately they didn't experience any problem at that time but suggested that it would be the slave cylinder and was a pricey job, so I took the car back and continued to drive it for a couple more weeks but the clutch pedal sticking was getting more regular, so I arranged for it to go into the garage for a new slave cylinder.

The garage fitted a new clutch assembly, flywheel and slave cylinder at a cost of almost £1200 and considered it sorted, however on my 2 mile journey home after collecting my car the clutch pedal was just as before, to say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. I informed the garage owner immediately and he said that I should drop it back in for them to re bleed the system as there must be some trapped air. This made no difference and in fact at one point I couldn't change gear at all as the clutch pedal had so little travel on it.

My question is, has anyone experienced this problem and what is the solution.

Thank you in anticipation of some good help and advice,

Cheers,

Ian

If the clutch is sticking, it is either going to be hydralic or mechanical.

Stupid/daffy points first:

  • You don't have the mats trapping the path of the clutch pedal - either depressing or return....sorry, gotta ask the question.

More sensible points:

  • Clutch slave cylinders themselves are not expensive parts, but they are a little fiddly to install.  £1200 is too much - go to another dealer or VW specialist.

Did they change the clutch itself or just the assembly?

By saying it doesn't have much travel, is this the pedal not returning to top and essentially only returning to the half-way position?

The clutch pedal is connected to the slave cylinder mechanically (is this free) and the slave cylinder is connected to the master cylinder.  Its worth breaking down the problem into those two chunks.  If those parts are good, then we are looking at the clutch assembly itself - why is this not engaging or disengaging properly?  When they installed (or if they installed a new clutch assembly) was it all centred properly using a centring tool (a £3 device) to make sure that everything is centred to allow for even wear and for ease of engagement and disengagement.  The clutch disc, the pressure plate and the release baring must all be on straight, otherwise the release fork won't work properly.
