Problematic Throttle - 1.2 12v BME

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My BME code Fabia runs like a treat most of the time but I find once the car has gotten warm after a substantial run (anything over 15 miles) and I am stopped with the engine running for more than a couple of minutes (e.g. at traffic lights - happened today and before) that the flap within the throttle body becomes sticky and causes the revs to drop much slower. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does it can become a right pain when changing gear. Sometimes when it does it at idle the revs will also drop to a point where it'll feel as if it would cut out before picking back up and idling normally. Would it just be a matter of taking the throttle body off and cleaning it? In which case, how would the throttle body be removed; e.g. where are the bolts/screws holding it on located?

I'm no expert and any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

This is actually indicative of an air leak on the intake side rather than a problem with the throttle body.

Usually this means splits in the vacuum hose between the inlet and the brake servo.

Thank you @sepulchrave! I shall have a nosey tomorrow should the weather permit.

Okay, had a look at the hose going between the inlet and the brake servo and it appears alright visually. The vacuum hose which connects to the air filter housing also seems to be intact. Where else should I be looking for an issue?

Did you take it off for a proper look?

Seems more often than not they crack under a clip or on the underside of the pipe on to one of the connections.

Oh I hadn't thought of that, thanks! I'll get to that once this rain decides to ease off a bit. :D

It needs a full manual inspection, not just a quick look at the readily visible areas. As @HeavyMetalRich suggests, with the additional note that fabric armoured hoses are known to collapse internally whilst remaining visually fine.

Noted. I'm not very mechanically minded but am eager to learn. So every single day is a learning day when it comes to this wee car. :)

Grammar and so on.

Just an update to this since I don't want to leave it on a cliff-hanger for those perhaps suffering the same issue. The issue lies with the accelerator pedal position sensor as when the pedal is pulled backwards the revs drop as they're meant to. Issue will be fixed through the week.

Correcting idiocy.

Did you mean accelerator pedal position sensor?

Oops, I did indeed. It's been a long day. :D

Just bumping to state my final solution to this problem after having a local independent look at the Fabia. It was indeed the throttle pedal sensor, I've got the old one off (to procure a part number) and am currently waiting for the arrival of a new one.

I would be interested in having a look at the old one if you would consider sending it to me Ryan?

Obviously not until you've definitely got a fix with the new one. :)

Aye Pete, that's not a problem. I'll be in touch via PM once the new one is in. :)
