Fuel tank punctured and diesel stolen

Featured Replies

There's some real crap out out there that masquerade as human beings, 3 quarters of a tank gone at a time like this. Now I can't get to work and have to figue out how to get this mess sorted. Anyone know how much a replacement tank is for a 2L 4x4 diesel 150 supplied and fitted?

Surely an insurance job.

Instant summary execution is what is needed.

+ 1 for that and I'd happily pull the trigger if they're caught !! You have my sympathies, I despise that sort of behaviour.

No CCTV in the vicinity ? Them getting caught won't fix your tank but it would offer some sort of satisfaction.

No, no cctv anywhere near it sadly. They can't really have even gotten much fuel as there was only one hole and the fuel filler cap hadn't been broken into to allow air to get in. A couple of litres for them and a bill of a few hunderd for me by the looks of it.

Premiums would rise for the next 5 years and they're already high enough now, no claims not protected so probably cheaper in the long run to deal with it myself. Skoda assist is picking the car up later today and taking it in

Wow! That’s a new one.

Sorry for all the hassle.

Hope you get it sorted out smoothly.

Try a breaker for a tank if you’re avoiding insurance.

Cant be a big market for these tanks (yet).

For anyone wondering on the cost of a tank replacement on a 4x4 tdi then you're looking at £2181.01. Keep an eye on your cars people.

Apparently the rear subframe has to come down and all the 4x4 system and wheels have to be re-aligned- Quite a sizeable job. Tank itself was around £600 with replacement parts required to fit it.

But still, at least some piece of ****e got a couple of litres of fuel!

I'm not known as a person who shows much empathy, but I do feel your pain. I would be incandescent !!

Someone has been making hay on the insurance companies dollar, with a ramp/vehicle lift and transmission jack I could do the job in a few hours, I recently did 4 wheel alignment on mine involving realigning both front and rear subframes lying on the floor using a pair of laser spirit levels & a piece of card and it took less than an hour, very hard to get the rear subframe bolts loose from that position but with a 2 post lift it would have been easy.

I bet the scrotes got more fuel on their tracky bottoms and the road than they did into their tank.

I assume you're talking main dealer prices here - and you're in London which doesn't help, could you not find an independent  VAG specialist to do the job. There might be a saving to made.

Yes London. Skoda assist picked the car up and my fault- I told them to take it to main dealers- I was too angry at the time to think about trying to find something that might be cheaper and wanted it done ASAP. It happened in the evening so it was too late in the day to get quotes when the car was being picked up the same day. Once at the dealers then the tank was dry and I would've had to pay for recovery to collect from dealers and take to a new place so I just let them do it

If it was done on insurance then its what happens, premiums after all are more expensive in city postcode areas.

I am surprised that no enterprising company has come up with a safe way of plugging holes drilled in plastic fuel tanks from the outside. I was thinking of something like is used to plug tyres or a drywall butterfly (spring toggle) fixing with an external sealing washer. I do understand the risks of petrol leaks but there must be some way to repair them.

There will be smart people that can repair plastic tanks but H&S for legit companies will still have the tank removed to do it, and clean inside.

Screwing a big self tapper in and doing a bit of plastic welding might be happening at 'Kerb Side Auto's around the country right now and that vehicle will be running around again.

Total spending being a quid.

Risk of Petrol or Diesel leaks according to which flavour the engine runs on.

Back in the days before Elf & safety when fuel tanks were steel & would rust out in the blink of an eye several companies sold bodges to repair them, Granville Petropatch was one of them, like a sticky band aid with some paint on resin.

Like weedkillers there is a much more expensive totally useless "Eco friendly" version available to sell you false hope in exchange for your moolah, trading on the name of the past which actually did what it said on the tin:

It really needs the sealing washer on the inside and there are ways of doing it usually requiring enlarging the hole to winkle in a split flange with tapped holes and a gasket then fixing a plain flange on the outside it needs to be flat but with a plastic tank the curvature will pull flat.

A very fast way which for a diesel tank I would not hesitate to use would be to fit an Avdel thin sheet nutsert with a bolt and sealing washer.
