2009 Scout 2.0tdi tickover rattle, alternator tensioner? Vid attached

Featured Replies

Hi all, tomorrow (Sunday) I need to drive to Heathrow from Cornwall and typically my forever reliable 09 scout has developed a loud rumble at tickover. Investigation shows something (tensioner) moving around (see video)

There's no chance of me getting it fixed today in time for tomorrow so I am wondering if I can safely drive it?

its the altenator pulley that causes that rumble, cost me around 30 quid for pulley and spline tool

And something is being thrown out by the belt, it could be disintegrating.

I've read when the aux belt lets go it often fouls the timing belt resulting in a requirement for an engine rebuild/replacement, be aware.

Thanks for the replies. I've not driven it and decided to take the train to work.  I'll get it booked in to a local garage I trust to sort it.

I'll report back once sorted to close this off 👍

It's a good thing the local garages are busy and can't fit me in as it's stopped me being lazy and I've pulled the alternator off this morning and established its the clutch that's gone. Locking the alternator from turning the pulley is solid in both directions.

Back in work now but will order clutch, belt and new tensioner later today.

Any suggestions for supplier much appreciated

thats what causes the belt to flap around

i ordered a SKF pulley from autodoc, the tool from ebay,i bought the belt and tensioner from ecp, but you can get pulley, tensioner and belt as a kit from autodoc, ebay, maybe ecp, they had some vag pulleys but said wouldn't fit mine,

Awesome thanks for the reply. Already got the tool so will probably get a kit from whoever can deliver sooner

autodoc took around 8 days, ebay or darkside might be quicker
