Fuel economy on a VRS newun

Featured Replies

Hi,

Would I be correct in the understanding that a new Diesel engine delivers reduced fuel economy from new? - (e.g. 30-40mpg)

How long does it take before I start seeing those figures improve?

Are you driving like a speed demon ?

My VRS did 60 mpg from new driving within the run in guidelines. :)

Something wrong there.

Mine too! 60+ mpg

I think someone has a faulty computer. Is it you or is it me. NEVER got anywhere near that

Mid 40s from new upto 65 once got 6-7k on. As I'm always saying the car returns fuel economy based on how you drive it - the Missus struggles to get 45 from the same car :thumbdwn:

New if driven hard I'd imagine you could get mid 30s - some people on here get that on ones with plenty of miles on.

no, this is not the onboard computer reading, this is me working it out.

If you turn the air-con off MPG is MUCH higher

The onboard computer tells a different story though, one that would get 60mpg:confused:

Get it looked at - I tend to brim it and measure fuel used against distance about every 5 tanks or so and the computer is always within a couple of mpg.

yeah, might dot that - first week I had it it chunked though

My computer seems fairly accurate too.

I find my computer is within +/-0.5mpg most times comparing it to Brim/Brim figure so its not far out. Mines done 9k now.

Usually around 37mpg urban commute in winter (short trip lots traffic)

38/39mpg urban in summer, with around 45/46 mpg A roads mixed driving.

Constant throttle taking it easy gets better on longer distance motorway trip.

Never seen 60mpg anytime but would obviously like too as long as I don't have to drive at 30 everywhere to do it.:)

Took it up to wolverhampton and back last night from monmouthshire (170mile round trip), saw 65mpg and i was going nsl or higher.

I dont like the fuel guage on the car though, its like a prediction guage not showing actually how much fuel you have left, i find it drops low after a quick blast around, then rises on eco driving, bloody annoying towards low tank because the buzzer comes on and off.

Just turned 8k on the clock, 2006 reg'd

Hi

Fabia vRS 2k miles, unmodified,

trip computer ( the non resetting counter) currently shows 82.1 mpg!

40 mile drive to work suburban/motorway/ A road/country lane journney, usually not in rush hour.

Have'nt tried brim/brim filling yet, but I certainly seem to be spending less on fuel lately!

Rob

82.1! holy sheet!

What are you doing? rolling downhill or somthing?

With that fuel consumption im surprised you've even had to fill up the tank once from new.

Hi

I did'nt expect it to be so good on fuel, but I tend to stick at around 60 mph, and as I often travel at quiet times, can often anticipate junctions/rounadabouts etc without losing too much speed as they are negotiated.

But I think I will try brim/brim filling as I know not may folk will believe me, TBH finding it hard to believe myself

Rob

If I hold steady throttle on a flat dual carriageway road at 70mph in 6th gear then I can easily see 65mpg+ displayed on the instant mpg display (maybe even 70mpg) but gradient changes or overtaking soon pushes the overall single trip (1) average down to nearer 45/50 which is a real figure.

My longer term (2) average is usually about 40mpg but that includes lots of standing traffic. Air con drops it by several mpg's as well if its working hard.

Had a 1.9 cDti Vectra on hire that displayed 999.9mpg on overrun but then you'd expect that. The vRS will also display big numbers on overrun.

I get similar results to you Rob59, i drive into and across cardiff from 6:30 am and the highest average the trip comuter has given me is 83mpg, also pootling along at 60mph and making sure I'm in the right gear across town. Coming home is a different matter I'm stuck in the rush hour traffic and get 50-60mpg covering 30miles each way.

Unmodded 06 Fabia Vrs with 2.2k on the clock.:D

Pre-remap etc it was doing 40-45 mpg. I can get higher if I drive below NSL on the motorway, or if I do b-roads without caning it.

The lowest average MPG I've managed was 28 mpg post-remap whilst absolutely caning it - this was me trying to push MPG as low as possible and I was revving up to the red line, which frankly is a waste of time ;)

Whilst pushing on but not exceedingly so, I tend to get around 42-45 mpg average daily, depending on fuel used. With Shell Diesel Extra & BP Ultimate it's generally at the higher end of the scale, Esso is pretty much in the middle, BP normal derv is same as supermarket derv at bottom end.

Whether it's worth the price difference depends on where you live :)

PS When I drove from Canterbury to Abingdon I averaged 54 mpg - this was sticking to NSL + minor margin of error on speedo at the most, and avoiding hard acceleration

I did a Warwick - N. Leicester - S. Leicester through both city centres and arrived home with 59.9 - really disappointed about that 0.1 :thumbdwn:

That was with the box on 1 and doing 75 (GPS - 80 on speedo) on the m-way. :p

Now today I'm going to get that .1 and have 60 then I'll be happy.

How come everyone gets such good mpg! i travel from newport to cardiff at 7am every morining (missing traffic) and my average mpg rarely rises above 42.2mpg!

im not complaining as my vr6 does 15-22mpg but its not nice knowing some people are getting 50+mpg! lucky sods :)

Yeah but we drive like b1tches!

When I first got mine I wasn't bothered about the MPG, FFS just get out there and enjoy it. :D

*When* I drive economically I can easily get 65mpg.

On a B road power thrash its more like 21.

how much of a bitch are we talking about? not going over 2k rpm in any gear?

im going to drive like a purple haired granny for two days. god damn it i want to see my furby do 60mpg!

Had mine 2 weeks, 3 tanks of fuel from new. It's definately improving fuel economy wise - though I'm booting it less, working out the optimum gears, and working on the new driving style. Going from a high reving petrol GTi - it is a considerable change.

If you can stay out of the turbo (around 2kRPM) it will be very economical - but if you boot it (i have) - I've been getting 45MPG.

I think my optimum at the moment is going to be 50MPG - and that is a mix of granny driving & booting it.

D

To be honest I've only recently been doing the granny driving going into work in the morning as I've had loads of time to kill in the mornings and I'm not in a rush to stare at a beige wall for 8 hours. Normal NSL on the roads gives anything from 55-70mpg and "spirited driving" 45ish.

As the roads are quiet when i go in i use the instant mpg reading to moderate my driving and use the 10mpg per gear rule, 50 in fifth etc. It's become a bit of a challenge for me in the mornings and having a very light right foot helps.

God i need a life.
