Hi I have a 2020 vRS 245bhp challenger petrol dsg hatchback. It says that the top end is 155mph. Can someone tell me if like the Golf R you can have the top end restriction taken off if you wanted? 

IIRC things like that can't be done with a OBD tool.

 

Anything along those lines is usually sorted by a remap of some descript.

Things to consider; your tyres are only rated to Y speeds (unless you have Z rated tyres). Are you planning to take the car on track days? I agree a remap is probably required. Whilst the engine is probably capable of outputting higher power and speeds, if you remap the car, it will probably require a new racing style clutch (unless it is a DSG - which will also require uprated clutches for sustained use although a DQ381 7 speed should be in theory capable).

 

There is in theory a maximum speed applied and a lot of the stuff done on the Golf R is applied via a trick-diff at the front (should already have that) and a HALDEX system at the back to give you extra grip and to get the power down. Think about the situation of why you need more than 155mph (which is quite fast even by Autobahn standards) and where you will use the extra power and speed.

Based on my experience with my previous VRSs.

 

The quoted top speed is less than the speed the car will actually achieve.  My first VRS was a MK2 F/L (200PS) and it reached 149 MPH, my second was a MK3 pre-F/L (220PS) and reached 155 MPH. The speeds reached were GPS speeds so more accurate than the speedo. The runs were on the Autobahns in Germany. TBH, at 155MPH I was to busy to look down at the speedo. I now have a F/L 245 and my better half said," No we are not going to Germany!!" So I won't get to test it. 🙂

 

As the 245 is quoted at 155, it is entirely possible it will hit 160ish and I suspect that there isn't any real need for a speed limiter.

 

I'm happy to be proved wrong.

What tracks in the UK or even Europe have straights long enough for that? Anyone considering it for UK roads needs their head checking. As above. 155 is quite fast. Not sure I'd want to do that for long on an autobahn. Did 110 for 30 mins or so in Germany a few years back then reigned it in to 80 for the rest of the trip. The gain speed on slower vehicles is frightening when you get past 3 figures.

VAG has 'history' of not setting the limiter too carefully - on a previous car the limiter was allegdly also 155mph but there were many members of the owners website I belonged to posting videos showing a GPS speed of 168mph (on a level unrestricted autobahn in Germany).

 

I know what you mean about speed difference - I used to travel regularly to Germany on business shortly after reunification and hired an Audi 90 - the number of times that a Trabant would pull out in front of me on a autobahn when I was doing well over 100mph (and it was going MUCH slower) was quite scary!

168 MPH is a good speed but I wonder if any of the cars had aero tweaks. When I did 155 MPH, the front end was getting light and, although the car was still slowly accelerating, I gave up when the car drifted into the inside lane on a slight left bend. Very interesting at that speed!! The quoted top speed for the car was 150 MPH and the car felt good at that speed.

No, 100% standard - no aero tweaks, no remaps (none needed as the car - Audi RS4 - had 420PS). I personally drove mine at 140mph before running out of autobahn and it was still accelerating well not just 'gaining speed'.

No tracks in this country have both the length to get to speed and then scrub it off before the next corner.

 

Only European track I feel you'd have a chance would be the nordschleife (that's dodgy at the best of times) and Mugello (but you'd need to be carrying some speed out the last corner)

 

I'd love to have a drive on the autobahn just to see how fast I could get my car. However I've seen oodles of videos of speed tests and what not on them and they look sketchy at the best of times. AutoTopNL does car reviews on them and he's forever getting caught in traffic.

The private VW test track at Ehra-Lessien has a long enough straight (with banked entry and exit).
