MK3 Rear shock absorbers

Featured Replies

Hi all. Wannabe mechanics here. I started being interested in fixing my own car recently. I successfully did oil filter service, air filter and cabin as well only by watching youtube videos. Now I want to try myself in changing rear shock absorbers, but I am having issues of finding video tutorials on yt. Only found for octavia mk2 and mk1. So if anyone could tell which car has a same procedure so I can look for tutorial, or someone can send me a link i would appreciate it. Also, i need a recommendation for shock absorbers brand for which I should go.

Just buy a haynes manual for the mk7 Golf. The Octavia is exactly the same.

Thanks for a quick reply. Why would I need VW codes decoder? I am going to get alerts on my dashboard after changing shocks? Do I need to buy a computer to switch them off or what? I am still a noob in all this but I have a will to learn.

Thanks for a reply. I watched a yt tutorial on how to change it.. Looks simple enough. But if u notice on this video

at 2:50 he gives notes on the ride heights of the vehicle. Do you know what hight is it for Octavias?

I don't know the exact figure but I would just torque up the lower bolt when the car is on the ground.

Thanks. Tell me is it a necessity to use torque newton meter measures and all fancy things like angular torque wrenches, Or it can be really done like this guy did it

On the Skoda online parts catalogue there is a list of shock absorbers for 0N1 cars and another list of shock absorbers for 0N4 cars.

Without using the VW/Skoda codes decoder, you wouldn't know that you need the 0N1 list and not the 0N4 list.

The 0N1 list is for cars fitted with standard rear suspension, whereas the 0N4 list if for cars fitted with multilink rear suspension. It's only cars such as the VRS and 4WD models that use the multilink rear suspension.

Would you find mister auto website trustworthy? They have option of giving your car reg here in Ireland and it automatically finds suitable items

I would always use a torque wrench to ensure the bolt is tightened correctly. That way you know it is fitted correctly with no chance of either working loose or shearing of from being overtightened.

I wouldn't rely on those searches. Often give multiple versions not suitable. Relatively straightforward to make sure though. Mostly base around sizes so you can measure what you already have.

Thanks for the previous answers, but how can I torque up the lower bolt with the car on ground? Do you even mean lower shock absorber bolt or what?

The rear bolt is still accessible from the rear if you lay down on the floor. You can then torque it up to the correct specification.

  • 1 year later...

The adjustable wrench works. I have a go through socket but it really only works with torx, spline vertically downwards.

Any better tools recommended for the top of shock absorber slotted tube?

Btw - top of tube slot is a 6mm spanner gap. If seized then a 6mm spanner will snap. The Bilsteins I fitted seem to have a 17mm top nut rather than 16mm top nut on OEM nut.
