Dreaded water pump issue

As above, I have had a bit of coolant leak for a wee while now, needing topped up every 3-4 weeks- Octavia Vrs petrol (2016). Car was in for service and MOT and had said to my mechanic as I knew there was an issue which he knew about as well. Water pump etc needing changed as expected- total cost being just over 600 quid (only 200 labour- he needs to have it a couple days as he works out of his own workshop on a local industrial estate) Dread to think how much a dealer would charge

£600 quid seems very expensive for an indy. I had the timing belt, water pump and the header tank replaced on my old 2015 VRS for £280. Was done same day as well.

Petrol doesn’t have a timing belt, does it?

 

My 2018 245 has a chain.

 

Even if there is a belt that is very expensive it’s a fixed prices repair at Skoda dealer for belt and pump costs £650.

 

Would expect an Indy to be much cheaper than the dealer. Like I said I had timing belt, water pump, header tank all done on my diesal 2015 Vrs for £280.  As they are VW specialist they even updated the electronic service record to show the work done.

Might also be worthwhile checking if coolant is leaking from the thermostat which is supposed to be a well known fault with mk3 petrol Vrs. Water pump might well be fine and not need changed at all. If your are only experiencing coolant loss.

I'm not sure if belt or chain.

Not the thermostat as he checked all that during the service when I told him about it. He consulted TPS and Skoda who did say the water pump is a known issue, which I believe is well documented here and elsewhere. The water pump kit and ancillaries is about 340 quid. To be honest I really trust the guy as he knows his stuff, and have been going to him for years with no issues with any of his work.

The water pump costs £80 at the dealers. Not £340 even a full kit with timing belt etc is no where near that sort of price.

I booked mine in today with the main dealer. Diesel vrs water pump and cambelt 599. I didn't think that was too bad as I remember paying 700 quid for a mk1 vrs for the same several years ago. One quote for the same job was over 1k.

As I said I trust the guy- he uses TPS who supply genuine Volkswagen group parts to the motor trade. If thats what he says the kit is  I am not going to dispute it.

Well maybe not then. 

Like I already said, he's quoted me a price and outlined what's involved, which he always does for any major jobs he has carried out over the years. I'm not going to get into a dispute about it all on a forum.

That's the part that's almost certainly caused a coolant leak on a TSI.

£80 is what my cousin paid for his 2016 TSI VRS water pump at our local dealers when he bought one a few months ago, I was with him when when he bought it. It was slightly cheaper at TPS but tour local one won't sell to the public here and they didn't have any in stock according to the indy he used and he didn't want to wait until they did.

The versions of the EA888 used in the MQB platform are all chain driven....

 

The only 2 belts:-

Aux belt for the alternator & air con compressor

water pump on other side of engine.

 

The main water pump (N493) has about four different pipe stubs on it & the gear for the belt ....& it is expensive...the only cheap pump is the "continued coolant circulation pump " (N51).

 

Thats from the VAG self study guides for the engine...

Petrol vRS has a timing chain, 1.4 & 1.5 petrol have a timing belt.

All sorted-total cost £615- just as well I've been working plenty of Saturday night overtime shifts recently :)

Where exactly are the leak points of the thermostat housing and coolant pump?

Usually around the pump housing itself.  HumbleMechanic (on Youtube) recently did a MK7 Golf video on how to replace the waterpump.  Its quite involved.

 

I'm hoping my coolant level likes to sit midway, but I'm sure it's always been on max.

That looks like a mission and a half!

 

Can you see the leak from above, guess need to remove some covers? Or is it an underneath job?

No, not from above. Underneath with undertray removed, torch and mirror maybe borsecope camera - possibly. 

 

However, the leak can be very hidden, mind leaked into the pcb enclosure and fried it. Very difficult to spot without removing thermostat and waterpump.
