Octavia EPC and rattling noise!

Featured Replies

Was merrily driving along when the EPC light came on momentarily

then a rattle consistent with engine speed could be heard!

the rattle seems to be coming from the top of the timing chain area

any ideas please

2011 petrol vrs 80k

Urgently get the camchain and tensioner checked - do not drive until this is done.

Did the EPC warning only light up momentarily, then extinguish without any action from you?

It did yes

Sounded like I was passing someone with a pneumatic drill outside.. then it quietened down!
the light was on 10secs max

was worse in 1st gear

drove 1/2mile

I’ve added a video of the noise on tickover

I was going to ask if TSI or TDI - but I see answer at bottom of your post.

You still think cam tensioner?
or that someone has swapped my engine for a diesel! 😂😂

sounds awful.. 🤦🏻‍♂️
will be getting towed in on Monday hopefully

Hi, seeing as you say this noise came on suddenly and was loud enough to be heard inside the cabin, I'd say there is a strong possibility that the camchain has 'jumped' one or several teeth on the cam sprockets - this could be through chain-stretch or from failure of the chain tensioner, although sunnen onset would suggest the tensioner. This is likely to serious if the valve timing gets out far enough to allow them to contact the pistons.

Is there any service history for camchain or tensioner?  Do you know engine type number? Eg. EA888.

Thanks

didnt feel out of time to be fair, I drove it home about 1/2 mile

There is no service history on the chain or tensioner

Only thing replaced is the inlet manifold

Engine number
CCZ 163089

Should have asked earlier is this a 1.8 or 2.0 TSI?

Issues with cam chain are seemingly not uncommon with these engines, although it is apparently not an item scheduled for routine maintenance!

Engine code (rather than engine number) is a series 4 letters - I think this will be on VIN plate. Ie. - CCTA; CBFA; CAEA; CDNC; etc.

Have you seen any sign of issues with low oil pressure, especially at idle? - the chain tensioner operates through oil pressure.

I hope someone with experiance on your engine can jump in and offer better advice - but critical thing to do straight off is to get chain and tensioner inspected.

Not to worry you too much, but take a look at a posting by DGW started 17/3/2013 under the topic heading of 1.8 & 2.0 TSI engine failures.

Thanks

I read some of that

I'm hoping I just need a new chain kit!

Will see when I manage to get it booke in!

So.. Bit of an update

Just got my car back today

Been with the garage 6 weeks! (not their fault)

Went in for new chain kit

Oil pump found to be faulty - Replaced

Then, no oil feed to top of engine

Stripped top down, and found the one way valve pictured solid, so was blocking oil to the top end

Luckily no damage to top end, I went and had a look at it when it came back from the engine services shop, all cams and head spot on

£20 part from VW solved the issue

The comment from the garage - It was on the shelf, which surprised them.. meaning its a regular part!

The garage suggested poor oil was to blame

But it had been regularly serviced

£1950 later and I'm back up and running - I added a new clutch kit while the gear box was off

Hopefully be keeping this for a while now to pay for itself!
