Interior and boot light upgrade

Featured Replies

Folks, I’m thinking of upgrading the interior (front and middle) and boot lights to LED or similar. Despite searching I’m unable to find much information on this. Can anyone guide me as to what type/spec bulbs I need and how easy it is to change all these bulbs? If anyone’s got any video of changing these that would be greatly appreciated

I thought they were LED as standard?

Headlights are led standard. Interior are not on sel

Be careful! I caused a total failure of the interior and boot lights after swapping the filament roof lights with LEDs. The positive connections for the festoon bulbs are partially hidden by the the function switch. One of the bulbs was not quite in the correct position and shorting to earth. Fortunately, there was no lasting damage. The original filament festoon bulbs are back in place and everything is now working as it should.
The  front lights are plug-in bulbs with “W” base and not so easy to get it wrong, but I have left them as original after my experience with the roof lights.

Just spotted my details are incorrect. My car is a Karoq 1.5 TSI Technical.

I'm 99% sure ours had LED interior bulbs and the boot light torch device was without a doubt LED and those SKODA projection light must have been, you could see 'em in the daylight - I can't double check the interiors inasmuch as I sold it 3 weeks ago..........

There's an old thread which covered this at:

I am only talking about the interior lights - I believe there were some spec downgrades on the my21, so mine is prob different to yours interior wise?

The interior lights on my 2020 Sportline are LED but the boot light was feeble. I can't remember whether that was a ( poor) LED, or halogen. But I fitted one the LED bootlights I had bought from Superskoda for my Octavia. It is literally, brilliant.  Now when I open the boot the rechargeable torch comes on on one side and the bright LED on the other....

Superskoda aren't cheap, but all the stuff I have bought has been decent stuff.....

Thanks for the link Mistac.  I'd already upgraded the boot light with the LED one from my old MK IV Golf and no problem. My difficulty was that I couldn't get a clear view of the +ve contacts to ensure the LEDs in the rear interior light had gone into the correct place. For what it's worth, I also checked before hand to establish which bulb contacts were +ve. They're the ones closest to the switch assembly in the centre of the light.

Likewise.

I couldn't stomach paying twenty five quid or whatever it was for a replacement light unit from Superskoda though, so I got a new pcb with three LEDs on it from these people.

Seven quid or so plus a few coppers for postage was much more bearable, and it's way brighter than the glow worm in a box that came with the car.

The other thing was that I didn't really need something quite as bright as the Superskoda one looks to be since I'm not expecting to stage a floodlit county cricket match in the boot.

Here's a comparison:

I did as Phil 245 did.  I had two in my previous Octavia vRS, swopped them withthe originals when that car went.  Unfortunatey the Karoq can only take one, because the removable "torch" is on the other side of the boot.  I'd gladly forego that for a proper lamp.

Having also just read RCC49's posts from November 2019 I'm going to have a go at the interior lights next week.

Thanks. Would be grateful for any feedback whether that be written or video., as I suspect that you will be doing yours before mine!

Will do.  I managed to get the fittings out of the ceiling easily, I used the spudger that came with the Nextbase dashcam.  Need to have a good look at the lights behind the sunvisors too.  The online electrical manual (link elsewhere on Briskoda) is useful.

The Osram bulbs are either quite expensive or out of stock, so I'll price everything up and shop around before diving in.  There should be some other decent quality bulbs out there.  But the current lighting is awful, especially in the back.

Well, I’ve replaced all the interior lights with the little kit that I ordered from earlier in the thread . Must say I was quite impressed with the kit itself, even comes with plastic trim removal thing and the led’s  make  a huge difference- if anything it’s now too bright!
In terms of fitting the bulbs, my comments are

1. the owners handbook is bloody useless (unless I am missing where it is listed)

2. I found it was largely trial and error (and a little help from you tube but again there is little on there either!) to remove the panels - refitting the bulbs is straightforward though.
3. The most difficult/awkward is the front light panel. Ended up having to take most of the 2/3 panel bits off and by then I was at point of no return (although once I had done that I thought is there an easier way!) and also broke a tiny clip off on one of the panels but fortunately it all went back together nicely

4. I ordered through Ali express - took 2-3  weeks and only cost £8-9  - so can’t understand why on earth Skoda did not fit better lights in first place

Here is the finished product along with one or two part way through photos pic 1 is rear centre lights, pics.  2 and 3 are sun visors and pic 4 is showing both rear centre and front centre, pic 5 is front centre light panel

One thing that puzzled me is that the 3 mini lights near the sunglasses holder look like they are wired up but do not work (difficult to see if bulbs are in there as light was fading) and another is I don’t remember the two mini map lights near the on/off buttons ever working before but they do now

Forgot to add in my earlier post that I have still not fitted the glovebox light. I managed to get the whole holder out of the glove box okay but couldn’t see how to get the little “metal cage” that surrounds the bulb out to access the bulb. If Anyone knows any tips on doing that, please let me know

Is your glovebox light installation different to the one shown on page 167 of the electrical system workshop manual here?

Thanks - From memory, it looks identical. I was having problems getting the little cover marked 2, off to access the bulb. Perhaps I’ll have another go at it when the outside light is better!

Like mistac, I too have purchased the Zoomsee LEDs. My comments are:

The OE lights fitted above the sun visors are already LED.

Changed the lights in the boot, glove box and rear passenger area without any problem. Those in the rear passenger area are a great improvement.

Using the electrical system workshop manual as a guide (page 201), it appears the front map reading downlights require the dismantling of the lamps / anti-theft sensor mounting trim, including the removal of 2 special screws to allow the frame to swing down, this then appears to allow the bulbs and holders to be removed (page 175). Am I reading this correctly, or can the light lenses be levered out to gain access to the bulbs?

Thanks for any information you are able to provide.

The sunvisor lights were definitely not led on my MY 21 SEL - but they are now!

I did find the front lights a bit of a faff, I did end up taking the unit apart and did almost break one of the pivot lugs in the process but it did all go back together fine. From memory, I took one bit apart to get access to the screws and then other bit then pivots down but be careful when you do this ( a 2nd person would help) as if your not careful it comes out of its own accord putting stress on plastic bits. Not sure if there is a short cut, as after I finished I wondered if there was a better way of doing it! I must say the new lights are fab - if anything now too bright! I looked at the below video from you tube to help me and it was more or less the same method - my roof console bit looks slightly different but it gives you a good idea

Thanks for the video. Just need to buy / borrow the correct screwdriver to get the job done.
