Park Assist - how to actually use it!

Featured Replies

Hey all,

2019 Octavia III with the optional extra of the Park Assist. I've had the car for 2.5 years and I've never once been able to use this function! Admittedly, most of the time when I'm parking I handle it in human mode, but there's been a few times I thought using the Park Assist might help me get into a particularly tight parallel parking spot. But I've never succeed to get it to work, despite trying to follow the instructions in the owner manual. Here's the process I try and follow (Irish car, so driving on the left):

  1. I activate the Park Assist by pressing the button on the console and slowly drive by a suitable spot, indicating to the left (passenger side)
  2. The display will eventually change to B in the this image:image.png.898b126ad54ea14a1f0ef598f94a9628.png
  3. I stop, engage reverse and then almost without fail it says Park Assist operation stopped or similar and I'm back into human mode.

What am I doing wrong??

I assume if you indicate left you don't get exactly the image in B but instead you get the arrow going left rather than right shown in the image.

Is your car manual or DSG? If DSG, I wouldn't normally perform a reverse manoeuvre using the accelerator, not sure if you are and that's what's causing the Park assist to disengage? Also I usually slowly disengage the brake after engaging reverse so that the car slowly creeps backwards.

Are you holding onto the steering wheel?

When I use it in my car for parallel parking I;

  • See the space I'm going to go
  • Press the button and select the parallel park option
  • Put my left indicator on
  • Drive slowly past both what will be the rear, then the front car
  • When the MF screen shows a car symbol with an arrow going into the space, I stop and go into reverse
  • I use only the clutch for speed and allow the car to steer itself
  • I switch between reverse and 1st when the car says to

I use it when I go the beach by one of my mates house because the roads around there have quite high kerbs. I always find it to park the car very well. That isn't to say I couldn't do it myself (6 months practice parking a tranny van in and around London) but the car's got sensors and can calculate it's aim into the space quicker than I can

Exactly what I did and it worked every time.

Many thanks for all the feedback, I'll try and follow your approaches and see if I have more success next time.
