New replacment tyres

Featured Replies

Hi all, I am aware that this topic has probably been covered before, but can't find anything recent.

After 28k miles it looks like I will be needing to replace the tires on my 2015 awd 1.4 Yeti, just wondering what peoples thoughts are on a suitable replacements?

Many thanks for any recommendations...

  • Hurray for Yeti's on 16" wheels 205/55 16" £147 for 2 Michelin Cross Climate 2 fully fitted last week at Kwik Fit.

  • Yep, still some of us original 16” wheelers around!

Avoid summer tyres, go for all season, my personal preference is Nexen N-blue but there are other makes😉

Summer tyres seem to be the majority of tyres sold in this country.

I rather liked the Goodyear Efficient Grip but my Yeti were both Front Wheel Drive

..ta for the replies, I noted a few years ago people were recommending "cross climates"..not sure if that is a generic term or a specific make?

Michelin Cross Climates is a specific make.

Other all season tyres are avaiable ;)

The latest from Michelin are 'Cross Climate 2' which are a move on from 'Cross Climate +.'

Check on what sizes they come in.

The Briskoda tyre section has several threads on 'All Season / All Weather tyres' and the latest versions from the manufacturers.

I have had Michelin Cross Climate+ on the rear for some time and am having Cross Climate 2s on the front this week at Kwik Fit.

£159.30 for the pair fully fitted ,16" wheels are great 😁
And a bluetooth speaker to be claimed from Michelin after fitting!

You won’t go wrong with any of the big makes all season tyres. I’ve got Goodyear All Seasons on my Yeti (!.2 DSG) and not only are they very quiet but also provide a more comfortable smoother ride. Roadholding etc. as good as any tyres I have had - I am not a 'pedal to the metal' type driver but do like to drive briskly. It is necessary to change all 4 tyres to All Seasons because of the different grip characteristics with summer tyres, looks like you are wanting to replace all 4 so no problems.

Hi, and yes will be replacing all 4. Since I had the car I have "rotated them" a couple of times, but will be needing an MOT next month and they are starting to get near the depth marks. I will probably be selling next year so thought I may as well get them changed and get some use of new tires over the winter months...ta for all the replies.

Cross Climate 2's seem to be winning most of the "All season" tests.

Fitted a set a few weeks ago.

..ta for that..any idea about the cost?

Another thumbs up for the Michelin's from me:thumbup:

I had the originals on a 4WD Yeti (TDi) and then the Cross Climate+ on both my current SEAT Mii and previous Yeti 4WD.

Excellent in all conditions and, as mentioned above, the new + version is a further improvement.

Not the cheapest, but extremely long lasting too.

I'm planning switching to these for my 4WD Suzuki S Cross when the existing Conti's have worn out.

From memory I paid around £500 for 4 fitted / balanced on my last Yeti (Costco).

When I looked round for my 16" these were the cheapest.

I'm on my second set of Michelin Cross Climate tyres and find them quiet with good road holding in the dry and wet although I've not had a chance to try them in snow (we've not seen any down here for a few years). The last set seemed to last pretty well. I'd happily have them again. As one of the last of the 16" wheels club I'm pleased to say they are also significantly cheaper in that size than 17" 😊

I have Cross Climate on our Octavia, Cross Climate+ on our Berlingo Van  and Cross Climate 2 on the Yeti.

The one area where I thought the Cross Climate and Cross Climate+ was just average was on snow and Ice. So much so I went with Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons on our other Octavia.  (I live near to and drive through the Peak District.

I was all set to buy another set of Goodyear's until I saw this years reviews and the Snow performance on the CC2's has been drastically improved, now beating the Vector 4 Season Gen3's and even the premium winter tyre on test for snow traction.

Time will tell, I'll find out in the next few weeks.

Just a mention for the Kleber Quadraxer.  I quote from my post of Jan 2020:

'My first Yeti was a heavy 2ltr 240 DSG 4x4, with OEM Conti tyres (no choice) on the special-supply 16" Moon wheels.  The Conti's were too soft and not really suitable for our local rural lanes (potholes, bad edges and loose stones) and they didn't like icy roads (we don't get much snow nowadays but heavy frost is common).  At 20K miles the treads were near the limit and I was not sorry to have to replace them.

I chose the Kleber Quadraxer as the best (for me) replacement at the time - all-season, Michelin parent, and fair price.  These did 22K miles on the 2Ltr Yeti, including towing a big caravan, never failed me and still had 5-6mm tread.  I transferred them to my current 1.2 petrol Yeti (no caravan now!).  At 5 years old, and a total 40K miles (perhaps 60% on poor roads), they began to show some cracking at the shoulder, although there was still around 3-4mm tread all over.  I replaced them with Quadraxer 2's only two or three weeks ago, so they are really too new to make fair comment on.  The original Quads did everything asked of them, and I had no reason to chose anything else.  However, these are certainly quieter than the Quad 1's and have already had to deal with heavy rain and floods.  Perhaps we'll have some snow to play in this year ! '

Hi all and thanks for the replies. If i was keeping the car I would definitely get the Michelin Cross climates. Our local tyre company has quoted £119+vat, so round £570 for 4.

However it was my intention to sell pre covid but it never happened, but I will probably be selling next year so I may go for their recommendation of Toyos own all season tyres which work out at around the £400 mark.

The fronts still have around 4mm of tread on them, but I understand that being a (part time) 4*4 it is better to replace them all at the same time?

..thanks again for taking time to reply....

The set of alloys that came with my Yeti when I bought it have Goodyear Efficient Grip, and I bought a spare set of alloys last year for winter use and had them fitted with Goodyear Vector 4 season tyres. I swap the wheels cover myself twice a year, that way I know the correct jacking points are used on my car. No issues with either set of tyres.

If your second set has all season Goodyear tyres why would you change them in the summer? I could understand if the second set had dedicated winter tyres but to swap between summer and all seasons seems pointless.

Because my original Efficient Grip tyres still have really good tread left on them, so I balance the wear over the year by swapping the wheels over.Plus the spare set of alloys I bought are slightly smaller than my original Origami alloys (which are in perfect condition) and are slightly scuffed, so I use those over winter with the 4 Seasons fitted.

So now I just swap the wheels over myself in Spring and winter so that I still get full use of the Efficient Grips tread during the summer. The other option would have been to sell my Efficient Grips for little money and just fit the 4 Season tyres, but I wanted to keep them and make use of their tread, and balance the wear from both sets of tyres.

When the Efficient Grip tyres are due for replacement I will probably get another set of 4 Season tyres fitted instead, and either sell the spare alloys for what I paid for them, or keep them and carry on using them as my winter wheels so I can keep my Origami wheels looking nice.

But why buy All Season tyres if you intend to swap with Efficient Grips? I could understand if you bought Winter tyres for winter use and kept the Efficient Grips for summer. Winter tyres are superior to All Season tyres for winter use.

yes I know, but we seldom need winter tyres in the UK. A few days of snow and it’s all over, winters tend to be mild of late and my Efficient Grips would have gripped perfectly fine all through last winter.

But it’s not all about the tyres, I like the idea of having another set of wheels for winter as road salt etc can be harsh to nice alloys, so I bought a second set of alloys but didn’t want the hassle and cost of having to take my car to a tyre shop to transfer my tyres over twice each year. So I found a cheap set of Spectrum alloys which then needed clodding with rubber, didn’t see that I needed winter tyres so went with 4 seasons.

I foresee in the future that I may have both sets running with all season tyres, using my nice alloys for summer and my other set for winter.

I used to have a set of Efficient Grips on alloys for summer and a set of winter Nokian's on steel wheels for winter. Changed myself Spring & Autumn. However even living in North Yorkshire rarely needed full winter tyres so decided to sell them and buy a set of All Season tyres on my existing alloy wheels to cover 12 months use. So far the All Season tyres have covered all the weather has thrown at me, they are a compromise but unless you are an extreme driver the performance is excellent all year round.
