1st service, variable servicing, what to do?

Featured Replies

Car is a couple of months off its first service on time basis (23 months/10800 miles), trying to find out what is supposed to be done.  Anyone got a link to fixed price servicing for that service?  The “book a service” link on the Skoda site is saying £249 for the service but gives no details.  Not a problem if it is but would rather know what’s being done before I book it.

I’ve put MrsDSL on the case and she’s loosing the will to be of any assistance at all as she can only find 3 years onwards!!!

TIA

The Skoda fixed price servicing chart does indeed only start after 3 years. But my first service a few weeks ago was the Oil & Inspection service and performed for £185 with a free courtesy car thrown in. I was on the fixed time regime, but I think the variable regime also just has an oil change as the first service.

It includes:

• Oil & filter change (premium synthetic oil)

• Full car road test – which includes checking steering operation, clutch and braking operation, engine performance, suspension noise and driving controls

• Inspection of all lights, instruments, bodywork, glass, locks, battery, drive belts, suspension, steering, fuel lines, brake pads/shoes/discs, hoses, wash/wipe system, exhaust system, engine components, fluid levels and tyres

• Diagnostic check and visual health check including reports

• Wash and vacuum

Ask them to Email the Work sheet for what they are actually going to do.

They are doing not much and not £249 worth.

Oil &Filter service and an overpriced pollen filter which you can change your self.

Diagnostic and any updates and a road test if even that.

No more than a Oil & Inspection Service & the Pollen Filter.

Below is from 3-10 years on Fixed Service Intervals but nothing extra is being done at 18,000-20,000 miles / 24 months or sooner.

I got it wrong, it’s the straight £185 oil change.  Prob next service (Dec 2024) will be same plus extended mode.

I resisted all the upselling opportunities (pollen filter & fuel additive), plus resisted the lure of the £14 a month for 2 x oil services, one pollen filter and one extended scope add on.  Whilst yes, there is a £128 saving on all that to be had, I’m quite happy sticking to biannual servicing as only doing pretty low mileage.  If my thinking is right, the service plan puts me in annual servicing mode, no ta.

And re £185, I’m quite happy with that as came from LRs and they seem to charge that just to answer the phone.  It’s going to be strange as the Skoda dealer (Guildford) is right next to where I took my LRs.  Now a Tesla dealer so no popping in and chewing the fat over LRs. 😞

I would remove the Pollen / Cabin filter and if it just needs a vacuum do that and vacuum around the space and wash and dry the plastic and replace the old filter or fit another.

I would not leave to 3 years old and the next service if doing one before the warranty expires and when doing the Haldex Service.

Was planning to get MOT and haldex done a couple of weeks before warranty dies Dec 22.  If I do get it serviced next year, will deffo be before the original warranty expires.  Plus then have to have a think re All-in-One package or straight warranty.  Something to mull over Black Friday 2022.  👍

Skoda is still advertising full wash and vacuum as part of the service, so don’t let dealer try the covid era stunt of can’t vacuum it (if they can drive it into workshop, then driving it to cleaning bay is no more risky)

If you have done nearly 11k miles, consider getting tyres swapped front back to even out wear (especially if it lease, as much cheaper than buying 2 new tyres).   Of course if you have emergency spare wheel, can jack them up yourself one by one in sequence and do job in under an hour for free.

All the tyres were swapped round when winter wheel were put on in Oct so no swapping wheels needed.

Re getting the car washed, I’m not that fussed.  In my 18 months of ownership it’s been washed once after I took delivery of it, not by me I hasten to add, so it can wait until the MOT in a years time.  TBS though, I’ll make sure they know not to wash it as I’m waiting for it so will be keen to get going and up the old A3 to home. 👍

Be aware.

Skoda / VW Group UK have been knocking back Corrosion or Paint Warranty claims now for a few years saying.

No record of any Body Inspections, even though the cars can have a FMDSH.   Full Main Dealers Services are supposed to include a Inspection of the body.

That is a reason to put in a clean car.

Oddly a car gets a Free Wash after the Service not when it arrives.

So a technician is supposed to spot poor repairs or damage on a possibly dirty car.

The Service books used to have a page after the service for the Technician to show where there were marks, damage, corrosion etc.

& the Palm Top used to be used as the car was inspected.

These were Bi-Annual checks at Major Services.

So basically Skoda / VW know if no record of an Inspection the place Servicing the car were not doing them.

Be Aware.

The Skoda / VW Warranty does not say that Annual or Bi-annual inspections are required to keep the Paint or Corrosion Warranty valid.

So basically they were taking the Pith.

Make sure if paying Main Dealers for a Service then they complete a Body Inspection & Report.

Best take pictures of your car / wheels when the car is dropped off, good Dealerships have the Service Desk person come out and check the car with you when you hand in the keys.

Some Dealership wanted £90 to do a body inspection on non Dealership Serviced cars to keep a Warranty Valid.

They were at it.

There are Techs and Master techs that have said on here that a Body Inspection is not included in the Work Sheet they have when getting the keys of a car to service.

Neither this car nor any of the others I've been fortunate enough to own have ever had a complimentary wash at a dealership even though they could have.

Not on your nelly.

I've looked over the fence and seen the staff playing footy with the sponge.

Re corrosion inspection, will make sure to make sure that’s on the list when the car goes in.  Was going to take a load of pics before anyway, no way she is mucky enough to not do a corrosion inspection.

Re washing, that deffo reinforces it.  👍

@Phutters

Which is why you should deliver a clean car @ it can get the bodywork inspected , so you tell them not to wash it and that should be written on the Work Sheet and leave a note in the car.

If you have one that goes offroad / on muddy tracks etc then a clean underneath is just Simply Clever before Servicing & Maintenance and Inspections at places that are not off road specialists. They might well always clean under a vehicle before working / inspecting it.

Without written instructions to not wash it might well get washed by error or because they are idiots.

Sitting in the dealer, waiting on the not-so-old girl getting her oil change.  Fended off the offers of extra chances to spend cash.  Also no worry re washing the car, they don’t do that, there’s a pandemic on don’t ya know!!  😆

Quick question time.  My brake pads are 12mm front and 8mm rear, what do they start with?  Is this higher wear at the rear normal?  The car’s done just under 11k miles since new.

TIA

Well, they were up for 5*s but I checked the service indicator to see when next due and it’s been switched to annual servicing from variable..  She’s gone back in to get that fixed.  The cynic in me thinks “hmmmm, very naughty” as I’d have thought someone would have had to consciously make that change.  Glad I checked!!

@DSL. Did you get papers printed to show you the Health Check details and is that showing the Bodywork Inspection so that no time down the line Skoda UK can say the Corrosion Warranty is void. As is happening with Citigo owners with rusty fuel filler areas.  They say no 2 yearly inspection done.  There is a pinned thread in Citigo section.

No sign of bodywork check, will look into that and give them a shout. 👍

And back to this variable servicing malarkie!

Service indicator before it went in, all ticketyboo.

When I got it back it was set to annual servicing as mentioned above.

After going back in and saying “Ahem, this isn’t right”, it went in again and came out with this:

The service chap explained it along the lines of “it’s too long to leave the car for 2 years [as it had been] so it needs another “inspection” where they don’t actually change anything”, I was starting to loose the will to live!  On my half hour drive back MrsDSL did some digging/googling and couldn’t find anything on the “extra” inspection, even on Looker’s own site.  There “oil and inspection”, nobody does just inspection according to her exhaustive research/googling!  Is this part of the proper Skoda variable servicing or the dealer’s attempt to get me in annually, whether I want to or not?

The answers to the above service question is now officially academic for the dealer that did the work as MrsDSL has declared “It ain’t going back there!”.  Hell hath no fury like SWMBO scorned!  🤣

And how do I check what’s on “the system”?  I’ve looked on skoda-connect.com and all it has for my car is a health check in March 21 (the car was no-where near a Skoda dealer, we were in lockdown and car hardly went anywhere), no note of healthcheck done a couple of months ago (fitted reversing camera) nor today’s service work.

Anyone got a link to the corrosion/warranty t&cs, where it says the length of said warranty?  All I can find is this where it has a 3yr paint warranty and unspecified perforation warranty.
