Pirelli P7 no sidewall protection

Featured Replies

Only had my VRS for 4 weeks now and had a little accident 😞

Now my old MK3.5 had Pilot Sport 4 and I am 100% sure this would have stopped the scruff on the alloy.

Over all I am surprised just how poor the P7s are compared to the Michelin on the older car.

I'm worried about corrosion during the winter months, would a bit of paint lacquer protect the rim until I can get this repaired?

Honestly, that is very minor and won't corrode over the coming winter months. Just get it smart repaired, and take out alloy insurance, well worth it if your kerb happy like myself! On another note, I now boycott pirelli for this exact reason, PS4s or Goodyear SuperSports both have good sidewall protection.

It’s a diamond cut face. They corrode without scuffs.  Can’t see a SMART working. Can you even do that on diamond cut faces?

They only corrode when you don’t look after them properly. Kerbing can accelerate issues for sure as you’ve broken the lacquer seal in some way so moisture can get in.
Biggest issue is drive through car washes - just don’t use them and clean your car properly at home with the right equipment and products.

A quick temp repair to inhibit corrosion if you have no lacquer is wipe with nail varnish remover to clear any dirt / salt now on it and paint over with clear nail varnish.

Obviously corrosion will occur on salted roads over a winter with exposed alloy or metals.

I've been quoted £70 for a repair on the outer rim so it's not too bad, just feel like I need to put a bit of protection over the scruff, I'll put some paint lacquer over it for now, now grit is starting to be laid.

Is it worth checking with the repair company about what/if anything to use? You wouldn't want to put something on that would react with what they are going to use or make their job harder.

Good point, I'll see if they recommend anything to use.

The Goodys do have a good level of protection. Overall have been impressed during the warmer months but they are down to around 3mm and VRS torque spins the tires at very low revs. Think i am going to ask santa for 2 PS4S

Here's a q for the boffins out there. What would the handling characteristics be like by replacing the front 2 with Mitch cross climate 2's , keeping the rears as Goodyear UHP's.

Oversteery, particularly on snow or ice (and they do happen in Glasgow).

Or you could get wheels that don't require pampering. Washing cars is not enjoyable to me. Similar to washing dishes.

You don’t need a vRS to spin wheels, done it in a 1 litre DSG pulling out of side turning in wet and cold.
That’s why I no longer use summer tyres Nov-Mar as they go hard and not grippy, but they are great when temperature is warmer.

The PS4 will also not grip well in wet below about +10c (as will all summer UHP tyres), and will be almost useless below +4c.   (Which means they would be useless today as it’s cold outside)
