Touch screens in Cars

Autocar is suggesting that the use of touch screens is more dangerous than a lot of illegal things (phone, drugs and drink!!)

I hate them cars and find them very difficult to use.

Totally agree , you very often have to look at a touch screen to use it but a 'proper' hardware button can be felt using fingers so there is rarely a need to look.

In a German court case (and appeal) the court decided when using it the driver had the same responsibilities/liabilities as if using a mobile device.

I think that many right handed people driving right hand drive cars find touch screens a PITA to use with fingers of their left hand.

The other day a guy in a Tesla was coming straight towards me and would have hit me head on while he was doing something on the screen in the middle of the car while using his right hand.

I clearly saw him coming as i was not messing about on mine and i pulled on to the verge, neither him or the cars fancy electrics / radar saw me.

I half expected the Tesla Lane Keep Assist to steer the car into mine.

Gone are the days of muscle memory and tactile feedback, replaced by a sleek shiny screen that requires you to take your eyes off the road. Some of the cars are designed primarily as LHD, I'm looking at the VAG screens where the 'buttons' are situated on the far left side. Putting those aside, a lot of cars are now equipped with a lot of safety features like radar sensors, speed recognition, lane assist, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring. But obviously mobile phones are more dangerous?

That being said, apparently it's okay to use a mobile phone as sat nav device if it's mounted properly (aka 'hands free'). A lot of the wording seems to fall onto the illegal use of 'hand-held' mobile phones, articles like here and here.

But of course I've seen many a white van driver driving with a mobile phone plastered against his face or a young lady with the phone held up against the steering wheel getting away with it.

I'll stick to this infotainment, methinks...

Did they need to write the article? Was it not already blindingly obvious to people?

No obvious to the car manufacturers (probably a cost cutting exercise.)

Not to all the muttering rotters who talk at great length about how marvellous the 62" touch screen in the Thripps Thunderclap Mk 27 is!

They're in this to make money - They're subhuman and so don't count any more... and they probably know full well, but still don't give a flip.

They're the sheep from which the above-mentioned money is to be made - Again, drivelling subhumans who would likely never even read such articles anyway.

Its called "Marketing"...

Basically all companies want to make "x" percentage more profit than they did last year......

So if the market is saturated & your product sells well, instead of making it last longer & making your company more efficient, they all decide to make the previous model obsolete & flog an all new version...& in some cases just a reskin of the older one sold at an over inflated price...

So to make their product stand out from everybody else's, they look for a "USP" (Unique selling point)...once they have that on their product all the other companies then look at this USP & copy it on their new versions...& so on.... ad nauseum.

Forget saving the planet when you must "save the economy" by purchasing the latest whiz bang.....

I seem to remember an old parable called "the Emperor's new clothes"...🤔...

P.S. as somebody who has a bit of interest in engineering/design/etc...I prefer the old adage of "form following function"...unfortunately many products look crap, & don't even function properly...

You better decide which side you're on This ship goes down before too long If Left is right then Right is Wrong You better decide which side you're on
Too bad for the gay revolution This is as far as we get And if you think you're free, well listen to me You ain't seen nothing yet We're all gonna feel the backlash
Of puritanical power And kicking us down into the ground Gonna be their Finest Hour
You better decide which side you're on The chips go down before too long If left is right then right is wrong You better decide which side you're on
Too late, trendy thinkers Your time is running out Ain't no time to wonder why Ain't no time for doubt Joseph, Reed and Whitehouse Are out to get your guts You better
decide which side you're on Forget those ifs and buts.
