Yeti 1.2TSI cam belt replacement

Hi everyone,

 

Our local dealership has stated that our 2017 1.2TSI Yeti is due a cambelt replacement. I've read various posts that the 1.2TSI has either a belt or a chain? I'm surprised that if our car does have a cambelt, that it needs replacing as the car is only just under 5 years old and has done 30k miles.

 

Is it likely to need replacing, and if so what sort of cost would this normally be?

Im watching this with interest as only last week I bought a 2017 1.2 tsi with lower miles than yours.

As far as I know, Skoda switched the 1.2 engine design to use a belt in about 2015.  It's common to recommend replacement on both a time and mileage basis, whichever comes first. It's likely that the Skoda recommended time interval is 5 years.  It's down to statistical risk really, if you go beyond 5 years the risk of a very expensive failure will steadily rise.

Yep, 5 years it is no matter how few miles you have driven. I know it is 5 years but I believe there is a mileage element in that however young the car is a cam belt change is due at 60,000 miles, so 5 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first.

I am thinking that is why there are quite a few 2017 1.2 Yeti’s on sale as original owner can see big bill next year!

That isn't stated by Skoda. It is time only.

Well thats a bit of a disaster for me then , my car has only done 16k and has Skoda FSH so I thought I was buying a “ gud un” looks like I have been sold a pup! 
 

Does anyone know the appx cost of the belt change ( I guess waterpump at the same time).

Robjon thanks for the link I have just followed it . There is reference to costs from £500. Plus more narrative. 

1.2 doesn't need the water pump doing as the belt doesn't drive it, as far as i understand.

Okay - thanks for clarifying. Question is whether I trade my 2017 Yeti now and save the cost of replacing cam belt or spend the money and have the cam belt replaced and continue to enjoy the Yeti for another few years. No contest really - I will spend the money for a new cam belt! Can’t find anything better to replace the Yeti with to be honest.

Had mine done at a VAG specialist in Southend, Essex for £338. I also always hit the 5 years long before the mileage limit.

The water pump does not need doing too, it is on the other end of the engine with its own little belt. The garage recommended that the water pump + it's belt be done every other cambelt change to mitigate failure. I choose that specialist as they had the VAS 611007 tool to check the timing afterwards.

In fact just have an enquiry into a VAG specialist in Neston Unit 20. If that’s successful they are only 10 miles away
