Asymmetric tyres on the wrong way round

Featured Replies

i just noticed while washing my car that one of my assymetric tyres is on the wrong way round it was like this leaving the dealers

how dodgy is this ?

I dont think in the dry it will be much different, but in the wet the tread pattern is the wrong way round so the tyre will not expell water properly leading to aquaplaning.

take it back, i had the same thing when i bought a set of wheels a few years back, they sorted it out straight away :)

Is it an assymetric tyre or a directional tyre?

An assymetric tyre can be fitted to either side of the car, it isnt directional. It only has to be fitted a certian way on the wheel.

A directional tyre is sided left or right.

How do you know if it is directional or asymetrical? Just curious as once I remeber my 'rents changing a tyre and it blew due to it being put the wrong way round after being bedded in the other way, if you follow me... :) :P

If its directional it wil have an arrow indicating the direction.

If its assymetric then it will be marked inside and outside.

 MOT failure to boot, could possibly invalidate your insurance as well.

As the book says "NOT FITTED IN ACCORDANCE OF MANUFACTURES INSTRUCTIONS" Get it changed pronto

It won't invalidate your insurance.

It won't invalidate your insurance.

never doubt an insurance company for finding a reason to invalidate your car :(

but if a tyre is fitted incorrectly then as far the manufacturer of said tyre is concerned the tyre is wrong and possibly dangerous which may in turn make the car not road worthy and by driving it knowing of this your insurance may be invalid.

over a poxy tyre

for example:

this tyre is the same no matter how it is fitted.

this tyre is directional, notice how the tread is pointing in a certain direction. change the direction and you change how it disperses water.

this tyre is Asymetrical, the tread is different from inner edge to outer edge so by fitting it on the incorrect side you are changing which part of the tread pattern carries more load in corners and which part disperses water in a straight line.

Good pics showing exactly what you're after

An insurance company would more than likely refuse a claim as you have noticed a defect with the car and not taken reasonable steps to rectify the defect. Thus your car is not kept in a good state of repair. This is a term on all of the policies I have ever seen.

I go for asymetric tyres myself, as that way you don't have an issue with a spare, but you get the benifit for cornering and designs :)

I'm always spotting loads of Saxo's Corsa's BMW's ....

multiple cars when there parked up that have the V-Shape of the tyre the wrong way round (Directional tyres).

the way the V is on the tyre moves the water from the centre to the outside of the tyre and when there back to front moves the water to the middle of the tyre,

(Unless they always drive in reverse when its wet)

anyways the easyiest way I found to look at the tyre was down at the front and up at the back.

so when the wheels rolling the grooves go outwards.

anyway there could be a claim with the tyre fitters if you had any problems that came about from tyre being put on wrong

You wouldn't get very far with that claim however now you have noticed it and had nothing done to rectify it. In all honesty is your safety really worth the few quid to refit a tyre. Just go back to the tyre place and poke them in a gentle way. I'm sure they will sort it.

i just got my mate to turn it on the rim for nothing job done thanks for the input

by the way anyone what the little plastic clip thing is for on the strut

It won't invalidate your insurance.

I see you investigate insurance fraud, fair play..... but as an MOT tester this tyre is in a dangerous state i,e not doing what it was designed to do thus it would fail...... surely if it is not fit to be driven on then a person knowlingly driving on it would have a case to answer with the insurance company "IF" something were to go wrong.

Your input would be very interesting as an insurance rep;;) Or have insurance companies got bigger things to deal with:confused:
