Superb 2 purchase advice & ICE upgrade question

Featured Replies

Hi All,

First time post, if I break any guidelines please let me know as it's unintentional.  I'm asking for any opinions people may have and then I have a couple of specific questions.  If anyone engages, thanks in advance!

I'm UK based and looking to buy a Superb 2.  I have a budget of £5k, maybe a bit more.  Realistic ideal would be a 2.0 diesel, manual, Elegance, hatch, 2010-2012, up to 130k miles, good history, recent-ish cam belt/water pump.  However, life being what it is, that's hard to find!  I've looked at a few on Autotrader, Ebay & Gumtree and rejected nearly all of them for one thing or another - too old, mileage too high, incomplete history, general suspicious vibe.......

However, I've found a 2011/11 plate 2.0 diesel SE hatch.  106k miles, full service history.  £4k from a independent garage.  The mileage seems to stack up against an MOT history check.  The vendor says they'll inspect the cam belt and if it's not obviously a replacement one, they'll put a cam belt kit on the vehicle.  Pics show a few marks but it is 10yrs old after all.  It's an SE not an Elegance, I know, but it seems priced about right given what else is out there at the moment.

Does anyone had any opinions they'd like to give?

My questions revolve around the ICE.  Pictures show it's got a Bolero head unit (picture of it from the advert) - I don't think it has DAB radio.  It's also not clear if the car has Bluetooth hands free telephony.  I want both of these things.

Is it possible to fit a Columbus from the same era?  I see a couple listed on Ebay for c. £300.  Would I need a Bluetooth module as well?  Alternatively, does anyone have experience with aftermarket touchscreens?  Don't mind spending up to c.£400 to get what I want (DAB, Bluetooth).

Thanks in advance to anyone who engages!

Oh, just to say I did see an earlier topic about this but it seemed to fizzle out without any definitive answers.  Also, the question of a Columbus swap wasn't discussed.

Just didn't want you all to think I've been lazy and not looked!

The 2011 SE didn't come with bluetooth as standard, however if you can hold out, personally I'd definitely wait until an elegance came up.

None of them came with DAB at that age, but the elegance gets adaptive xenon headlights, leather heated seats and columbus satellite navigation as standard over the SE.

Is there a reason you don't want an estate? They are exactly the same length car, the estate simply adds more practicality.

Not that I'm biased because I own one, but I think the estate is a much better looking car :)

Here's a copy of the 2011 brochure, to give you an idea of what's what.

Thanks for the comments @softscoop and also for the brochure, really useful.

The "no estate" thing is an arbitrary opinion, which makes no sense.  I actually think the estate is the better looking version too!

However, this afternoon there have been developments.....

Found a 2013/13 plate 2.0 CR 170 2wd Elegance. 102k, FSH, cam belt & water pump done within last 12 months.  c. £6k, there's some movement.  Pictures make it look very clean.

And it's an estate!

Going to see it on the 29th.  If it's right, I'm going to buy it I think.

That sounds like a really good buy, especially given the prices at the minute.

Hopefully the condition checks out when you see it in the flesh.

I'd echo what others have said re holding out for an Elegance spec car if you can - the extras are worth having and to my mind suit the 'luxe' size and nature of the car.

Also, whilst I have come to get along with the somewhat 'interesting' proportions of the hatch I own, I'd agree that the estate definitely looks more cohesive. However, when the chance came to buy mine I had to leap on it quick, so a hatch it had to be..

Good luck - hope you find the right one - they're wonderful cars and very rewarding to own in my experience.

Keep us posted. 👍

All the best.

I can speak to aftermarket head units as I just took out my Columbus RNS510 and replaced with an Xtrons 10" Android 10 unit. Fitting it was a breeze but you will need some adapter cables like dual fakra to DIN and another type for the GPS if you want to use the built in car aerials rather than the feeble ones that come with the head unit. It has bluetooth and hands free. Happy to answer any questions or go more in depth as to what I bought and the process to do it if you'd like.

I bought my 4x4 SE assuming it had blue tooth as standard as there is a phone button on the Bolero head unit but it hasn't as there is no blue tooth unit under the drivers seat. 😞  I think an aftermarket head unit is probably going to be the quickest way to get Bluetooth & Sat Nav. A head unit with a with an auxiliary socket so I can connect my phone and use google maps?  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143727992879

I assume means Standard Equipment?

An extra £12 gets you a known name instead of a NO NAME and a really good piece of kit from Xtrons and delivered from UK rather than China

Does it support the factory fitted front and rear parking sensor system? I can't see that it mentions that?

I'm sure everyone on here who has one fitted still has a display for the sensors?

I 'think' the tracking display is still there but TBH I don't use it.

The temp display is different but still there.

Mine was from here 2+ yrs ago...

Like everyone, I've had a few niggles but compared to the outdated Colombus I can live with it

Hi all, the original poster of the thread here.  Unfortunately I missed out on the Superb estate I went after at Christmas.  Life then got in the way but I'm back on the hunt.  Having had time to reflect, I'm going to be holding out for a Superb 2 Elegance.  I'm still on the fence between the hatch and the estate but admit that I'm now leaning towards the latter - to my eyes it's a better resolved shape and I think others agree.

I'm also on the fence about the ICE, which is actaully a big deal to me due to the time I'll be spending in the car.  I can live without DAB, as I can access that through my phone.  For handsfree I can get a parrot or some such fitted....

OR

I could go 3rd party head unit.

The sound quality of the hands free does worry me on this though, as a couple of people I know have bought replacement head units and the integrated mic's are useless.  I can't understand them when I phone, basically.  I'll look into the Xtrons though.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Elegance spec comes with the Columbus as standard, and the Bluetooth module under the driver's seat. I've had no complaints from people about call quality in nearly 6 years of ownership. OE microphone is fitted inside the front map light console at the top of the windscreen.

I definitely think the estate is a nicer looking car, and sure the extra room will come in handy sometimes. I had to swap out bluetooth modules as mine is a 2008 but after 2 years of a columbus I think a new headunit is a better idea

Thanks both, interesting to see different views.

@chimaerawhat year is your one, i.e. with oe bluetooth?  I think oe spec is normally a lot better than aftermarket, which often have the mic in the head unit itself.

Mine's a 2012 Elegance, registered early March. CR170 DSG estate. I'm pretty sure all Elegance models had the Columbus + BT setup, but the BT setup on earlier cars doesn't play well with newer phones. If you do a search it's something that has been discussed a fair few times.
