Rear Bump Stop Trimming

Featured Replies

Is it possible/ worthwhile to just trim the rear ones? I seem to remember someone saying in a thread that they didn't need to do all four. Also, how easy is it to do yourself? I recently fitted the ARB and noticed that once the bolt is undone at the bottom of the damper it just eases down gently, so therefore is it just a case of undoing the bolts on the top strut (no need for wheel removal or jacking)? I tried looking at this thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia/eibach-springs-how-improve-ride/32720/?highlight=bump+stops but for some reason I can't get the instruction pages to open. I have bought some Araldite Rapid ready for the job. Also, does the car need to be re-aligned afterwards? Thanks in advance

To remove and trim the rear bump stop you need to remove the rear shock absorber assembly.

To do this you will need to jack the car up, remove the wheel, remove the inner arch liner and undo the 2 upper and one lower mounting bolt.

You'll then need to undo the shock absorber top nut to remove the bump stop.

Trimming bump stops (with pics) would make for a neat how-to guide (hint, hint)

Alternatively listing correct part numbers/prices for the correct powerflex ones would prevent a lot of stanley-knife injuries for some of us!

Cheers,

Bas

Thanks VRStu:thumbup: Don't suppose you remember what size nuts they are do you? Don't want to find that I don't have the right spanners, sorry to be a pain.

Can't find any sizes but I think I'll just give it a go, so in your oppinion it's worth just doing the back ones then?

The RS Front bump stops are shorter than the others already and tbh I think should be ok.

I remember seeing a thread with pics of trimmed bump stops months back but can't find it now.

I think I need mine doing too but it seems a big job labour wise. I think I will save for some new uprated dampers and get it done at the same time.

Bumps stops are only trimmed when new, shorter dampers are fitted.

You do need to trim the fronts aswell.

Bugger:mad: I was all set to go. What is the reason for this Ross?

The obvious reason is that the shaft and therefore travel of the shock absorber will be reduced when the new, lowering shocks/springs are fitted.

The reason I said it may not matter, although I don't disagree with Ross and mine are trimmed, is that the VRS ones are already pretty short.

I have attached an image of the two parts that fit together. The black ring fits up inside the bearing and the bumpstop fits inside that.

I am a little confused though as you say you were all ready to go - this modification is not required unless the car is lowered. Was it lowered by someone who didn't cut them and now you want them cut?

That's right, the car was lowered on Eibach springs about six months ago and the bump stops weren't trimmed as I presume the garage didn't know of the need to. The reason I was just going to trim the rear ones is that in rsbspt's thread he only trimmed 10 mm off the front ones but 30 mm off the rears. This made me think that maybe it would make enough of a difference to just do the rears and it is a relatively simple job. Thought that if it didn't make enough of a difference then it would at least save me some labour charge if I needed to take it to a garage to get the fronts done aswell.

It should be possible to do the rears without a ramp, and remembering what was said, the reason to do it is when lowered, the bumpstops are already touching which makes for a choppy ride on the motorway.. i keep meaning to try to do mine but can never be bovvered

Don't you have a 'man that does' for you Colin?  :D
