Handbrake issues

Featured Replies

Hi all so despite changing my rear shoes and the servos earlier this year plus the associated springs and such I,m struggling to set the handbrake correctly. Normal braking is fine but despite following the guides to set handbrake wheels jocked up off ground and setting at click 1 until wheels are just binding its not working correctly. When I try to go for 4 or 5 clicks ends up with one wheel loose and other binding and on steep hills having to pull it up to like 7 or 8 clicks to hold the car. I,m thinking the cables are stretched tbh would you agree and if so is it an easy job changing the cables ???

Did you completely remove the lips on the inside surfaces of the drums while they were off?

If not, do that, then slacken off the handbrake cable at the equaliser bar, then 'pre-adjust' the adjuster wedges on both sides until you can only just get each drum back on.

That should get the adjustment about even on both sides. Can't be done while there's a lip.

tbf mate the drums are only 12 months old did not feel any lips on them but will check tomorrow again just in case and will try adjusting your method 😃

Sticky handbrake cable on one side?. I had problems on one side where the handbrake clip to the arm had corroded and damaged the inner. No real sign of damage to cable sheath other than slight corrosion. I found easiest way was to take cable off car and check for problems or slacken off adjuster ( 10mm ratchet spanner works well) , remove cable from handbrake and rear shoes and check for friction/ any sticking points.

One other place I found problems is with the adjuster wedge not dropping when replaced. Local garage has also told me of problems with "notches" on the wedges getting filled with dust.

Again I found it simpler to replace both cables as the other one had stretched and examine the sheath showed signs of problems.

I used a cheapo torque wrench on the wheel nuts to ensure wheels are binding equally.

Part number 6N0609589.

If you Google that part number you will see various places selling them.

Yeah, some of the prices are crazy.

I caved in and changed the cables on wife’s Vrs, so wished I’d done them sooner as not a bad job to do and what a difference it made.

Know you’ve got drums and shoes but if everything is clean and shoes adjusted manually so just slightly dragging and both sides the same then all should be ok regarding handbrake.

One way to tell is have a look at the bar on end of the lever we’re the cables are connected and adjustment is for the cables ( if it’s the same as ours) and see if it’s pulling straight when applying the handbrake, wife’s was **** eyed

You could try using the cross-reference numbers or different makes and models, or see if the same part is described/named differently on other vehicles.

I got 5 drain plugs for the common price of one just by looking around and using the "wrong" (previous/alternative) part number - obviously it depends on monetary cost and how much time and effort you are prepared to put in, or on the other hand, how much life and lifeforce you want to waste on the search against reward to hassle ratio.

ETA: (not saying it's so with this part)  but, most annoying is when you hunt around and find a good quality part for a reasonable price to find even though it's not declared it's also in the kit of parts you also bought. 😄

I managed to find a UK company they were 81p each plus postage so got those, I don't mind paying but does make me go red when I see these companies price hiking really cheap parts.

Well done.  You'd hope it's just commerce, different companies have different overheads and stocking arrangements and different pricing levels.  I do wonder if some suppliers just allow some algorithms or other programs to follow the pricing of others.  Sometimes it can go be very obvious and totally mad.

Some P&P really annoys me but as a customer you can chose not to deal with the company.  I often try to get as much in an order to justify the P&P and include items just for stock, send the order off to later discover I've forgotten something important so separate order and double the lot of P&P.  Doh.  Smaller companies can be more flexible and add it to the original order if you contact in time but the bigger ones you can't talk the computer systems round.

Possibly try AVS. Part cost is a lot lower but delivery charge on top. Still less than a tenner for two.

I did mine ( with help from son) a couple of years ago. Pointless changing just one, as the other one will most possinbly be stretched. The clamps on the rear arm can be re used ,but a tiewrap meets MOT standards and stops any problems with cable corrosion. One thing I'd suggest is the use of a 10mm ratchet spannen.

Phone a UK VW/Skoda dealer for a price.

Should be ballpark 50p each, e.g. Volkswagen / Audi / Seat / Skoda Glide Piece 6N0609589 - LLLParts

Bought 12 off today, 08/02/22, from RRG Skoda in Rochdale with an invoice price of £0.67 each giving a final price with the VAT of £9.65. I also tried VW Oldham (£0.80 each) and Pentagon Seat (£1.00 each) as I was looking for best delivery as car had popped a wheel cylinder so was off the road, and I decided that as these were original now (110K miles) was probably a good time for change. Makes the Ebay This part is brand NEW, directly from factory (Not Chinese replacement or Refurbished like other sellers have for same price), 100% suitable and Original prices where some are £7.00 to £9.33 each appear rediculas.

Handbrake out of travel one side showed the equalizer bar at the handbrake to be acutely angled indicating a problem near side.  Jacking the car revealed near side ineffective and the lever against the stop.  Pushing the lever up did not work as as soon as the handbrake was operated it went back to the stop, obviously not returning or self adjusting.  Fitted assist spring but it would still not self adjust and be back on the stop when the handbrake was applied.  I disconnected the cable and manually operated the lever to no avail.  I lubricated the fulcrum with plus gas and penetrating oil.  After leaving it to soak overnight and manually operating it several times it eventually worked correctly and saved me buying a new caliper.  Hope this is helpful.
