UK newspapers are warning readers that using gears wrong can get you fined.

Dft / DVSA & the DVLA will have to do with this stuff getting press coverage.

or is it just https://leaseloco.com

FREE ADVERTISING.

MP's & Transport Ministers will be none the wiser than many reading the stuff.

Those that update the Highway Code surely know about modern cars and features and standard fixtures / functions.

eg of one of many publications running the story.

They say coasting could mean you are in big trouble if not in full control of a vehicle.

Well we know that not being in control is an issue,

Also that 'Coasting' is part of many vehicles systems that managed to get car manufacturers the WLTP results that has cars on the road.

The journalists seem to be unaware that many cars now 'Coast' out of gear many many times in a journey.  Even that many drivers do not even know the car has 'Coasting' as part of the deal.

DSG's disengage the clutches.  No driver input as only 2 pedals and neither are clutch pedal.

Over a decade on the roads now, and now on EV's.

Now the driver hands control over to cars, and more standard safety features come in in 2022.   Maybe drivers should take back control.  Disable all features like Lane Keep Assist.

More nonsense then. 🙄

As it seems that Lane discipline and driving with a phone to your ear - both easily seen by everyone apart from Plod and easily enforceable - I fail to see how or who will enforce this one 🤔

The car will report you, as happened when a guy crashed setting off the airbags so the car automatically called the emergency services and when they got there he was over the drink drive limit and tested positive for cocaine

in terms of things drivers seem unaware of -

our L/A put a roundabout at the entrance to our estate during the summer. and i swear to god 80% of drivers seem to have forgotten how roundabouts work - ie that have the right of way to enter the estate if coming from town over you, ****, heading towards town... on top of im pretty sure the number of speeding drivers o. the stretch of road has also increased... i watched a spanner in a 5 series get fairly squirrely while braking for the roundabout as i positioned myself to make it quite clear to him as he sped toward the r/about (id say 90kph in the 50 zone (55mph in a 30)) that "no numb nuts, i have priority not you..." and drove around in front of him as slow as i could without stalling...

he was the 4th in the last week alone.

on the specific articles above.. that reads like a really ****ty advertorial by the leasing company to try and increase internet traffic to the site and boost their own advertising revenue.. sites like that should be ddos'ed in to oblivion imo... you want more visitors? here have so many it kills your bs pedalling site, muppet.

That Highway Code update is aimed at hypermilers driving cars with manual gearboxes who quite proudly state that they coast many miles in neutral and become quite irate when asked online "how long would it take you to get into gear in an emergency?".

Millions of cars on It UK roads have very little engine braking and even if it in gear Muppets might just apply the brakes in an emergency and are not dropping gears to stop. If coasting and within the speed limit they will stop.  If they have no drive to the wheels then that could well be a good thing as if they hit the accelerator rather than the brake that could be a saviour.    Watching someone drive round a hazard with ABS opporating is better on YouTube than real world.

Maybe they should have included fiddling with stupid touch screen in car controls as something that wasn't permitted.

You don’t see many cyclists continuing to pedal when going downhill, but presumably this part of the code applies to them as well?

(Maybe posted in jest, but with a modicum of questioning)

It does say you must keep both feet on the pedals.   I assume if you have only one foot that does not apply, as both hands on the bars does not apply to hand / arm amputees.  Unicycles are not illegal in the UK, and in Scotland riding on pavements where there is no street lighting is not illegal.

Not all cycles have freewheels though or gears and no neutral.
