Leaking Aerial?

Featured Replies

Anyone had a leaking Aerial? Sorry long post coming up  😬

My aerial hasn't worked on AM for well over two years I assumed it was water damage on the amplifier but who uses AM these days and there was no ingress. So I ignored it.

Recently we have had days of torrential rain and I noticed a wet patch on the passenger side rear seat (which never gets used) but no visible sign of ingress on the headlining. I also noticed the boot is wet on that side too with a small puddle in the spare wheel well.

Am I right in assuming the aerial is leaking and usually (due to driving because the car always lists that way as it leaves the drive) the water runs down inside the headlining then down the rear passenger column trim into the boot and because the car was not moved for a few days the water has pooled on the headlining and slowly dripped through onto the seat even though there is no water staining on the headlining? It's pristine.

I don't know the model but to give you a reply and encourage others to reply.

What about you rear hatch/tailgate, perhaps seal?

You can add your car details to you name badge thingy or post to give more idea in case it's model and/or age specific problems, such as I have  - Fabia Mk3 1.2 TSI (90) SE (hatch).

Leaking boot seal seems to be way more common. I'd get some paper and tape it to the suspect leaking spaces then drive it around some bends. If nothing gives, just put the tiniest seal with some clear silicone around the aerial. If you do it with your fingers and clean it up you will never notice it's there once cured

much more likely to be a boot seal or rear light cluster issue I would have thought if there is no damp mark on the headlining??

Thanks for the replies. My rear seat is wet under where the aerial is mounted.

The boot seal is a long way from the wet seat area.  I'd checked the seal and it's perfect.

I need to do a hosepipe test 👍

I have also done around the aerial mount with a small bead of sealant.  👍

What i noticed on mine is that from the rear doors, at least when they are open, water tends to drop about 10cm into the seat on that side on a flat surface, or right in the middle of it if it's on an incline. Caught me by surprise as in 2 minutes there was already a decent wet spot on that side
