Parking Sensor Fitment Queries

Featured Replies

Okay, so I'm planning to be fitting parking sensors to the car, hence the thread title. Anyway, my questions are therefore:

  1. Will the bumper need to be removed?
  2. Will the metal bar behind the bumper hinder/prevent fitting?

No stupid or smart Alec "turn your head round and use your eyes" responses please, just getting that out of the way. :D

I'd like to gather as much information as necessary and possible before even picking up any tools and cracking on with this job.

Many thanks in advance.

Ryan. :)

Christ, you can have mine, the beeping drives me nuts!

Joking apart, my bumper is different to accommodate the sensors but the crash bar is the same, unfortunately there's no switch on the dash to turn it off otherwise I would.

Thank you. :)

The sensors come with a thing for putting the holes in the plastic trim on the bumper in order to fit them, so that bit is covered.

Yet another thing I'd like to pull the fuse on but I don't there's a separate fuse for it.

My bumper doesn't have that trim it has a different colour matched trim and the sensor mounting holes are moulded into the bumper. Factory fitted reversing sensors are fairly rare on Mark 1's I'm told, they were probably an expensive option.

Yep, it is. :o

Are you fitting OEM or aftermarket ?  either way I think you'll find it a lot easier to remove the bumper cover to run the wiring from the sensors to the control unit and with the bumper removed I think you'll find the cover is marked as to where the sensors should be fitted

Aftermarket sensors. Hawk Alarm branded.

There's a rubber grommet that I can see from a "snippet" from a HatBoyHarvey video, would the be such a location where the cabling would run through?

Thank you for the tid-bit about the cover. :)

There should be a grommet to run the cables through on both sides of the rear panel it's normally behind the bumper bar so that's why I suggest you remove the bumper cover otherwise you'll struggle to reach up and under the cover to pull the wiring through, also if the sensors are anything like the OEM the holder fits from behind the cover

Thanks! :)

So I take it that it would make the most sense to remove the rear bumper then? That seems like the logical option to me at this moment.

Absolutely, impossible to do it properly without removing it.

I thought as much, but it always helps to make sure. :)

Never removed a bumper - Mk1, Mk2 or Polo 6C

There used to be an article on fabia-vrs.com. Website long since gone.

Plastic rear bumper needs to be removed.

ISTR the factory kit came with three sensors. Most aftermarket have four.

Whatever, pick your spots and drill the holes. There may be indications on the inside of the bumper suggesting where they go.

There should be holes in parts of the inside of the plastic moulding so you can zip-tie the cabling up.

One of the grommets on the back of the car under the bumper is where the cabling enters the car. How you weatherproof it , dunno.

Yes three sensors across the back, none on the corners.

Parking sensors are fitted and beeping. It would have been possible to fit them without removing the bumper but would have taken longer than yanking the thing off.

Thank you all for your help. :)
