Hi folks,

 

The rear windows in our 2011 Octavia mk2 haven't worked since we bought it a couple of years ago. I finally got around to scanning with ODBEleven and there a bunch of errors; see below. I think the previous owner had it looked at before and the summary description was it needed a part replacing - unfortunately, no more detail than that. I believe both windows failed together which leads me to suspect a more central issue (not a fuse though). I have errors on all the doors bar the passenger to do with central locking but they all lock and unlock fine - never had any intermittent issues either. I'm thinking it is related to the comfort (system) module. For a start, in the data log nothing is reported, not even any info and when I tried to read anything from it directly in OBDEleven it times out trying to connect. Do you think I'm on the right lines? If it is the CCM, how can I go about coding a replacement given I can't read the current coding? Any pointers greatly welcomed. Looks like I have a glow plug to replace as well 🤦‍♂️

im no expert but alot of those error codes could all be down to bad earthing. theres a few earth connectors around the car, i would start there and clean them all up and make sure the connections are all solid. then start looking at the wiring looms especially where they pass through door pillars and connection blocks for breaks, grays or water damage.

Fractured cables in the drivers door bellows.

Checked rear door bellows, all looks ok in there. That wouldn't cause the CCM not to respond though, would it?

looking okay and being okay may not be the same. you really need to get a multimeter on it and continuity check them in case theres a split inside the insulation. you also really need to check the driver door one as thats got the most daily wear and also the most likely place to give an issue affecting many bits of the car.

The CCM not responding doesn't necessarily mean anything, it can be a limitation of the software. 

 

Try a quick test to see if the motors are getting power: Put the key in the driver's door and turn it to unlock, the hold it there. The windows should all wind down, turn it to lock and hold it there to wind them back up.

 

I'm thinking wiring damage in one of the door shuts, or corrosion in the multiplug. 

Tired the key in the door trick - what I've uncovered there is another problem as the key isn't operating the lock. Not going there, already got a door in pieces on my old Passat to fix a cracked solder joint in the lock mechanism. Holding the lock/unlock button on the key operates just the front door windows though.

 

I've got hold of vcds this evening. A full scan shows the same errors (not checked in detail yet) but it also shows the CCM as being installed. If you target the CCM directly, again, it times out. I find this super suspect, given the CCM is detected on the CAN bus yet can't communicate with it and fits with the original summary diagnosis when we got the car (admittedly, this is also swaying my suspicions). Feels like it'd be a poor design if the controller would become unresponsive if there were issues downstream. 

 

Lack of daylight preventing any deeper investigation of wiring faults at the moment. Anyone know where I can get a wiring/component location diagram?

@Wino is a generally reliable source of diagrams?

Not familiar with Octy 2 systems but could try to have a look at some diagrams tomorrow and maybe come up with some suggestions.

 

All Skoda wiring diagrams are available to download as massive pdf files via erWin Skoda. Can be downloaded comfortably within an hour with lots else, which would cost you 7 euros plus tax.

Rear windows fixed! Thanks for the suggestions. It turned out that when the previous owner fitted a dash cam the fuses got messed around with and the rear window one got removed. I'd checked before but must have misread the numbering and wasn't expecting a fuse not to be present at all.  

 

CCM still doesn't respond which is a bit odd but nevermind.
