Dip Stick (no, really !!)

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

Quick question. OK, had the car 2 months, one month of which was in the dealership (long story). So, anyway, thought I'd check the oil, lifted the bonnet and went to pull the YELLOW dip stick

It stuck, it seems to be very tight in the tube, didn't want to break it. To re-cap, Yellow hoop, top of the dip stick,  sat in a yellow ring, top of the tube. The appears to have two legs, clasps that hold it closed in place on the yellow ring

Dealer demo, probably only had its oil checked once or twice so brand new and very tight. Question, is there a trick, rotate first, sqeeze etc or just a good yank !!  Handbook is no help

Any helpful suggestions before I try and break it ?  🤦‍♂️😄

Yep mine is the same yellow and ridiculously tight. I just give it a slight rotational wiggle in place and then pull like hell upwards. It'll come out without breaking anything.

Hi Fencer

Thanks for the moral support, glad its not just me being a wimp !

I'll give it a proper yank and report back . . . . . . ( hoping nobody reports back saying they broke it 😏)

Well if there is a trick I'll be very interested, but I've checked the dip stick several times since I got the vehicle (having given it a very solid yank each time to get it out) and not had any problems. I suspect it's deliberately designed just to make doubly sure that the dipstick stays secured. But yes you will feel like you're going to break something when you first do it!

👍

The rubber o ring probably dried out and is causing it to stick, little bit of wd40 will sort it out

It’s just a tight fit. I always twist slightly as I pull it. (The dipstick) (in the engine)

Thanks guys, all noted. New car so not sure the O ring has failed, just really tight due to lack of use

Will give it another go using Radar's twist method 🙃
