Automatic lights on

Featured Replies

Never having had this feature in any of my previous cars, I am intirgued and puzzled at its unpredicactable  functioning.  The sensor (wherever it is) seems to not understand the difference between late afternoon wintery full sunshine and cloudy gloom with some mist. During the recent very sunny weather, the headlights have been automatically switched on whilst the afternoon sun has been shining, dazzling bright. On the other hand, on occasions of very cloudy, grey skies with no visible sun and a light mist, the automatic light function has not activated. It's not a big deal, but I am puzzled as to why this should be. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

The auto lights are for poor light conditions. Which shouldn’t be understood as “dark”. Low, bright sunlight can cause them to come on as that counts as poor light.  They cannot detect mist, so that shouldn’t be considered.

Lastly. Keep in mind that just like all other assists functions, they are there to assist you. Not fully take over. If you don’t like the decision it makes, manually override it.

^ What he said. Oh and they're also stupid enough to switch the lights on when they're in shadow, say driving under a bridge or along a road with house shadows over the centre or so of your lane.

mine is set to "late", so its not trigger happy every time i go under a bridge or pass the shade of a tree.

otherwise i'm quite happy with the "auto-ness" of my lights switching on/off, given the various conditions.

I wouldnt say thats stupid. If the car is in a tunnel or shadow its less visible so more light, the better. In a lot of countries in the world its illegal to not have your headlights on in a tunnel/under a bridge

Did yoou actually read the whole of my comment, or just stop at "under a bridge"?

Yeah I read the whole thing, hence I said any shadow means you’re even slightly less visible so what’s the harm in the headlights coming on?

dont know if I’m the minority here but I’d much rather have my lights on all the time so I’m more visible

That's the whole point of DRL - Daytime Running Light.....so u r visible at all times, even if u r under a bridge or shadow for a sec or two - u r still visible!!!

Ive noticed that many DRL's only work on the front, and maybe all of them, and drivers dont realise they cant easily be seen at the rear in gloomy conditions.

@JR RS If what you say the point of DRLS (Daytime / Daylight Running Lights) is then the rear Position / Sidelights would come on.

The Point of DRLs to the front was they could be seen in bright sunlight and show other road users or pedestrians / cyclists there is a moving vehicle.

Oddly they are still on if stopped if the ignition is on.

Bl00dy annoying in poor light situations where there should be Dipped Headlights on and where the lights set on Auto might not well put the lights on to be seen.

There are European Countries that require the DRL's to be on front and rear, as there are where 2 rear Fog lights are required.

That is not the UK though.

....which is why I have activated "scandanavian lights" mode - the rear lights r on all the time, like the front DRLs.

Is this ‘Scandinavian mode ‘ just a software setting available in all cars or something more technical?

U need VCDS or OBDEleven to make the code change, below, to enable it.

I’d prefer to assign each rear light a new function of DRL.  That way you don’t have numberplate lights and dash lights on all the time.
