VM Gamma Cassette player compatibility with Fabia 6 CD changer?

Featured Replies

Hello,
I would just wondering if anyone would know if the 1J0035186D VW Gamma head unit is compatible with the stock 1J6035111A Fabia CD changer?
Many thanks

It would depend on connector shape and pinout, most critically.

Skoda MS501 cassette units, Skoda Symphony CD and the DX1 Navigation system all should work with the CD changer on a plug and (pray) play basis.

Blimey, that's like a Betamax or VHS question!

Agreed.

I'd personally recommend changing the head unit for something a little newer/advanced (delete as appropriate) as if CD is a must, you can get one with Bluetooth and all that fancy gadgetry that you don't really need as well as your traditional compact disc.

Then again, that wouldn't really answer the OPs question, however. I don't quite know what will fully answer it besides pulling the trigger and buying a Gamma to try with a Fabia CD changer to find out, mind you.

The Gamma did have a CD changer that went into the dash that another member had some time ago. Then you could swap out your old Fabia CD changer for something more useful, like an underseat storage box. :)

I see, I think I'm just gonna do what you said in the other comment and take the hit, buy a set and see if it works or not. I think it will as from research these CD changers are also used in other VW vehicles, including ones that used the Gamma head unit

Trying to go back in time a bit lol. I already have a modern bluetooth etc head unit, just gonna but the Gamma in the other DIN spot where the cubby hole is, set up a Y connector to give it power, then set up RCA to AUX, connecting into my modern head unit, so that I can use both without frying anything.

That's all very clever actually.

I yanked my Bluetooth one out since I don't particularly believe in phoning folk when driving since I'm antisocial that way. :D

A Sony head unit with a CD changer is the replacement and is running fine for my needs. I like what you're doing though. Your other option is that you put your bluetooth head unit in the bottom slot and get a hold of a Skoda MS501/502 (can't remember exact number) and put it in the top. No need for a facia adaptor that way as well.

Hope this helps. :)

Physically, the connectors are the same. So there's a chance it'll work assuming you get or make the wiring looms.

However, why bother? I've got a 64 or 128GB short USB key plugged into a mechless head unit. If I wanted to run music off my phone or phone integrate, it would do that too if I could bother to run the mic around the A pillar to the sun visor.

The OP has outlined their plans above. They intend to keep their modern head unit but also run the Gamma and changer via a Y-connector. I presume they've got their reasons and that. :)

From memory the VW Gamma is made by Blaupunkt and the earlier Skoda CD changers by Grundig...   and my recollection is that they don't talk to each other.

Sounds right to me, actually.

I did try to find out, minefield. Sony in there somewhere too. Lots of older topics on VWVortex. All the piccies, long since disappeared.

Ah, I missed the subsequent update.

Thank you for the advice everyone, just wanted to note for future reference if anyone stumbles on this thread because they're trying to do the same setup as me that it does work. Very pleased with it, however it does lead to a bit of a spaghetti junction of wires, esp since i used wagos for the Y connections which are good and easy but take up a good bit of room esp since I needed to use 5 to power the 2nd unit.

@AnnoyingPentium's post in this thread is v helpful - better to do that over what I did, however from what I found such Skoda units are more expensive to get hold of (at least from my searches), so if you want to do it the cheap (and painful) then some VW units work, you just need a Facia too.
