ive been advised by a greedy dealership that the cam chain tensioners should be changed every 5 yrs at a cost of around £900 OUCH!

my car has only done 40k been told its due at next service ice or 90k miles whichever is first , seems very steep for a serviceable part inc fitting

I know labour is costly at a dealership , should I get new parts and have an independent trusted mechanic do the work or just ignore them.

I know the mk2 had issues but a mk3 chain driven 230 bhp TSI and a facelift later car at that , has anyone had a cam chain issue on one of these 

or has everyone changed the tensioners as advises every 5 yrs ?

I know the parts come to less than £100 or near £200 with a chain but the chain is supposed to be lifetime of the car so pointless unless it really high miles 

Pretty sure the tensioners are a lifetime part with no service requirement.

 

As far as I know, the MK3 doesn't typically have any tensioner issues. I'm certainly not planning to touch the one on my vRS...

 

There were issues with the MK2 engines where the tensioner had a design flaw and could skip a tooth which was fixed by a newer tensioner revision so maybe the dealer is using that as an excuse
