4x4 gearbox reliability

Featured Replies

I have been hearing stories that many 4x4 gearboxes have broken even with low mileages and not much use. Anyone on here like to comment? I dont fancy forking out for a new one at some point soon!

I took the box out of mine at about 60000 very hard miles, it was maped to 225 bhp at 8000 miles, a few more tweaks at about 25000 gave 250 bhp, the car completed 3 Cannonball runs & then at about 55000 I fitted a bigger turbo etc which gave 356 bhp.

The reason for taking the box out was that the ratios were too short for the bigger power.

The Diff was showing slight signs of wear but appart from that it was fine so I would conclude that the 4x4 box is as strong as any other & can take more than average abuse without breaking

the car was a 52 plate 4x4

To add RS internals fit straight in so if you do break a box that might be the way to go, a very good RS box shouldnt cost more than £250, then its just the cost of the rebuild

thats reassuring to say the least! :)

No problems here either. Again the box came out at around 60k, the last 20k of which was mapped, the bulk of which was done running 280ftlb torque and included many standing starts and high rev gear changes. The gearbox was fine when removed but wasn't expected to handle the power the car is soon to have but that's mainly down to the diff I believe.

The old 4x4 boxes are sought after for the ratios by people who race golfs etc so worth selectivly marketing the old one !!

Any tips on where to sell it? Ebay or somewhere else?

Flea bays as good a place as any, also try the golf forums etc, worth marketing it for the short ratios rather than as a spare box for a 4x4, Ive never heard of anyone needing a replacement 4x4 box.

Mine went via a contact of one of the Guys at Jabba who said I want it before Id even thought of how to get rid of it, I gather it was for his racing Golf

Thanks, let me know if they know of anyone else that needs one though. BTW what did you get for yours (let me know by PM if you prefer)?

PM'd

38,000 miles.... 28,000 of them ruinning at 220bhp still absolutly fine.

ok so up to 60k miles of hard driving its ok... I am hoping for at least 150k probably more before the gearbox dies, I would hope thats reasonable on a modern car. anyone got that sort of mileage on a 4x4?

Bengie has higher mileage IIRC but I also have a feeling he has had gearbox probs. Maybe worth dropping him a PM and pointing him to this thread.

I havent replaced an Octavia 4x4 box yet.

Done plenty of Audi TT boxes but thats a different box as mentioned elsewhere.

mine blew up and chewed itself to bits at 95k

the previous owner towed and it was standard when it went pop.

it went because a bearing on the main shaft failed causing it to drop and make the the gearbox eat itself

a very expensive repair but luckily i got a payout from skoda as a friendly gesture so i paid labor and they paid parts. was about 3k all in at the end though(my part was about £300 :D )

A new FEX gearbox is circa £3880 or £2200 on exchange - the latter presumably only applies if the unit being returned is rebuildable. All a bit eye-watering!

Not sure if it is the same but on the RS box the weak point is the crown diff which is rivetted in.

Replace rivetts with high tensile bolts and all is good.....the boxes are generally strong....only issues for 4x4 is if your are producing big torque the stress of transfering it to the rear axle may cause some probs.

75k kms here, and still smooth as ever.

Just found this thread purely by chance, I own a 2004 4x4 on 64k miles and looks like the gearbox has gone. FEX code is an 02C gearbox, hoping its my diff that's gone and can be repaired.

What servicing has the gearbox and the Haldex had in the 14 years?

I think 12yrs 6months might actually be a new thread revival record!

Well done, have a trophy...

I've only owned the car a year, from the info I've found the gearbox is filled for life but it could be changed if you wanted to. The car had fsh before I bought it but I've no idea if the Haldex has been touched, my son works for tps so I can get a good deal on parts.

No idea about your gearbox and filled for life, others will know,

but even DSG like the DQ200 that is filled for life can have oil changes and millions had when there was a World Wide recall excluding in Europe which obviously is not in the world.

Filled for life, or life long fitted parts that there are replacements for are a funny thing with the VW Group,

they are Life Long until gubbed.
