Ferrite core has no effect

Featured Replies

Mocked up the fitting of my Blackvue dashcam using the OBD connector that came with it.  Ran the cable up the right-hand A-pillar and across the headlining to the rear-view mirror.  I've added a ferrite core to the cable about 3 inches from the camera.  As soon as I turn on the power, the DAB signal drops to nothing.  Have I bought a dodgy ferrite core, or is this a futile exercise?  Seriously considering selling the dashcam on if this can't be resolved.

I don’t have problems with DAB reception and my BlackVue dashcam. I haven’t fitted any ferrite core on the cable, I don’t remember reading needing that on the instructions. I thought they tended to be fitted to dashcams at the cheaper end of the market. Have BlackVue updated their installation instructions then?

No change to Blackvue instructions.  Thought ferrite core was standard practice for all dashcams.  I wonder if the problem is down to the OBD port cable?  Anybody here have any experience?

Did your dashcam also come with a cigarette lighter plug cable? If so, you could try that just to see if the DAB is okay then.

Yes, will try that.   Cheers.

Plugging into the obd port is a terrible idea seen as signals go through it that are prone to interference.

the dab antenna is on the rear window so it won’t be a direct issue, more electrical interference

I was using the cable that came with the dashcam.

I guess if I want parking mode I'll have to use the Power Magic Pro.

My DAB won't work with my Nextbase camera. Proper kit and hardwired to car. To be fair it was flaky before I fitted the dashcam...

I've just stopped using DAB:blink:

Ferrite Cores are supplied with Nextbase (at least they were with my 522GW) and this is definitely not the cheaper end of the market re: Dashcams.

Very good of Nextbase to include one, although highly unlikely to be needed (so they say here). Did you find you needed it in your Octavia then?

Dunno.

It was included in the pack so I fitted it when I installed the rear/Front Dash Cams.

Does it work?

I'd have to remove it to find out and there's no point.

Kinda like having my 3 Covid Jabs.

Do they work?

Dunno.

Not caught Covid so not gonna "uninstall 'em" (not sure how I would do that) to prove a point.

😁

Sausage Fingers.

Hardwired our Nextbase cam via the fuse box behind the glovebox. Placed the cable behind the airbag on the A Pillar, under the headliner to the smart assist camera housing and then to the dashcam. No ferrite core needed and no DAB interference issues whatsoever.

Huzzah !! 😄
